Maddow Blasts Law Requiring Aurora Shooting Victim's Parents To Pay Gun Manufacturers
Huff Po ^ | 05/22/2015 | Garbiel Arana

~snip~

Maddow opened her show with heart-rending footage of the Aurora trial. She highlighted the testimony of Brenton Lowak, whose friend Jessica Ghawi -- a 24-year-old aspiring sports reporter -- died in the shooting.

~snip~

The parents unsuccessfully sued the retailers who made the firearm that killed their daughter. Colorado state law requires that plaintiffs who sue the manufacturers of gun products pay the companies' legal fees if they lose.

“That’s not a typo,” Maddow said, adding, “The mother and father of the victim who died in the Aurora mass shooting have just been ordered to pay a quarter-million dollars to the gun makers who sold the bullets that were used in the Aurora mass shooting -- the parents of the girl who was killed.”

They should sue the lawyer who convinced them they could win such a frivolous suit.

Ideally, yes. America would do well to set the legal clock back about 200 years. Complete with pillorys in the town square for just such occasions. I think we’d see the ‘grieving parents’ and lawyers alike reevaluate the burning need for ‘justice’.

It was probably some anti-gun organization that convinced them to sue and provided the lawyer, knowing that the plaintiffs would be on the hook for the defendant’s lawyer’s fees, not the anti-gun group.

First thing I’d want to know is if any of the usual suspects in the agitation department (Brady, Bloomberg, etc) had a hand in encouraging, supporting, or in any other way pushing the parents who filed the suit.

Mom's demand action. Sandy Phillips, prior to moving to CO for the trial lived in San Antonio. I got so sick of seeing her on the local news. She turned into a real anti 2nd Amendment useful idiot for the Left.

The plaintiffs will probably just file bankruptcy anyway.

The attorney probably explained that but also probably figured that they could wiggle out of paying using a media blitz like this.

The Phillips were not just grieving parents when they brought suit against Lucky Gunner, Sportsman’s Guide, and the other defendants. They were paid employees of the Brady Campaign!

"LOL! If he did, I hope they got the last part in writing! I feel sorry for these people if they were counseled to push for this in the suit. They've been violated twice, if that is the case. Once by the shooter, and again by the shyster."

and a third time by the movie theater who established a kill zone with the gun free signs. in Colorado gun free zones (other than federali property, schools, and specific usually government areas) are not legally binding and i chuckle every time i walk into a store displaying a kill zone sign.

maybe next they’ll sue their lawyer for taking the case.

I remember reading an article about the increasing dearth of OB/GYNs in PA because of malpractice suits.

OTOH, in PA, lawyers have a limit of $75K on their liability for malpractice.

I'm sure the lawyers all conspire together, so I wouldn't be surprised to see severe CO limitations on suing lawyers for malpractice.

Good. People who file frivolous lawsuits should pay, and these claims were just about as frivolous as they come.

Thanks for that link! Everyone should see that! She joined up with the Brady bunch, and now someone (the parents or the Brady bunch) will have to foot the tab. In that case, it is a question of who should eat it more.

Considering they are doing dirt to companies I have done business with, let em swing.

It just goes to show poor decisions can be made in moments of grief--but how many of us would have chosen THAT path?

On Lonnie Phillips Linked In page back in April for his job as operations mgr for the Brady Center it listed as the Second bullet point under experience “Led department in adding names of gun owners to data base.”

Re the silverware. It would be like suing the silverware manufacturer of the forks that the Mansons shoved into Sharon Tate’s stomach.

Frivilous can be expense. Now the parents should sue their lawyer for helping them to file the law suit. Two sets of idiots duking it out. I like that. Nothing like vulture parents and attorneys feasting off a tragedy.

Maddow does not tell you that the parents are paid employees of the Brady Center.

Now the parents should sue their lawyer for helping them to file the law suit.

I would have agreed at first, but then The little tidbit linked in this post came to light. (Hat tip to sockmonkey!)

When I saw that, and realized these people had joined the Brady bunch, who helped bring the lawsuit, well, I have a hard time mustering up any sympathy for the whole lot. It sucks losing a kid, but that's not a reason to sell your soul.
