“It’s iron work has become “iconic”.”

Yes, I know that that is true but I cannot understand why. Every time I have seen the Eiffel Tower in person and/or in photographs I think, “What a waste of good iron,” of course, aside from the fact that it has become a tourist trap and is now just a glorified antenna and a very ugly antenna, at that.

Shameless plug for a product but it’s worth it -

I thought $100 bucks for a pair of pants was pretty steep but these things give you the peace of mind to enjoy your travel even when in sketchy places. I have worn these all over Western and Eastern Europe and Latin America. They are awesome. Experienced pick pockets look for the easy mark. Once glance at these and they don’t bother you. The amateurs will never get past the zippers and extra safety measures. Wore them on the Eiffel tower last fall while pickpockets were being arrested all around us - never had to worry. Wore them in the rough places in Eastern Europe where the half the pickpockets in Western Europe actually come from. They even make you feel safer in Chicago when combined with a plate carrier or Kevlar.

Or if one was concerned about possible collateral damage from a wayward explosion the size, say, of a cherrybomb (would produce a goodly little bruise, minimally, or a small flesh wound tucked into a butt pocket....then one could use flash-paper printed money and enhance with a smoke chemical. Would definitely “out” the perp and produce a small ass-burn without any animals being harmed during the shooting of this film.

I am really surprised that the staff is raising this. I would have thought they would leave the pickpockets alone out of worker solidarity. The explanation must be that the Gypsies are not unionized and the Tower workers view them as scabs.

The Tower guards are among the rudest workers in France, and that is saying something. The last time I was at the Tower, I heard a guard using the familiar tense with a complete stranger!

My Great Uncle married a French woman and so when my pop went to Paris with him, everyone was briefed about the "Pushpiks" that try to crowd you going through the turnstile (fare jumpers) and in the process, while you are distracted lift your wallet.

Uncle Cal was wise to it and one time when visiting their kids in France, he grabbed the wrist of the Pushpik... and nearly broke it. Not bad for an 80 year-old guy.

Had that been at home in Florida, the Glock would have came out.

In the fall of 1975 five members of a pickpocket gang were injured when a stolen wallet exploded as they were splitting up the loot. I think the one holding it had his fingers blown off.

The Paris police were much more concerned about catching the wallet owner than they were about the thieves.

I too felt the same way until I visited it several times and had the occasion to go up in both daylight and then dark. It silhouettes the skyline and is just beautiful when lit up. Paris, except for the French, is a great place to visit but I would not want to live there!

Check out the Korean film ‘Open City’, it’s on free Hulu and is all about Korean pick pocket gangs.

I’ll say it. I hate Gypsies. Anywhere they go in Europe they bring the slums and crime of Romania with them.

We don’t have them here...Yet. I’m sure Obama will be sending planes to the outskirts of Paris and Rome to pack them in to a neighborhood near you.

Also the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be dismantled after the Exposition.

Maybe you did not read my entire post. I, also, have visited the Eiffel Tower on many occasion. If one puts lipstick on a pig it is still butt-ugly.

We have some genuine gypsies here same as plague Paris. Not many, but I have seen them and once had to get aggressive with one ugly woman that asking me for a handout.

I guess it would be too much to ask that pickpockets be arrested and sent to prison in France?
