A permanent plaque has been unveiled to honor Michael Brown, the black 18-year-old who was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson last August.

The steel and gold plate will be drilled into the road on Canfield Drive where Brown was shot, replacing a makeshift memorial of flowers and toys, which had become a safety hazard.

It features an engraving of the teenager in his graduation mortar board, with a message that his family 'would like the memory of Michael Brown to be a happy one.'

This country is screwed. We now honor and revere criminals with great pride.

Alas, it seems it was ever so. Al Capone in his time was celebrated and the movie success of Bonnie and Clyde and Butch and Sundance reveal how much we love the myth of the criminal.

But the real tragedy is in mythologizing a criminal not just to appease the mob but for political purposes such was the case with, "John Brown's body lies a moldering in the grave…" I would compare this eulogy to Michael Brown with the mythologizing of Horst Wessel.

We really should have a monument to the man who captured John Brown, Robert E Lee, one to the man who shot Michael Brown, Darren Wilson and one in Florida to George Zimmerman who shot Trayvon Martin.

I don't know whether the plate has just gold color from baser metals or whether it means real gold, at least gold plated. But spreading the word that there is real gold just laying there in the middle of the street might encourage the local media blessed class to really honor the gentle giant's memory by looting it for drug money.
