Student activist Emma Sulkowicz made headlines last fall, pledging to carry her mattress around Columbia University’s campus until the administration expelled her alleged rapist, Paul Nungesser. That didn’t happen.
Tuesday, both students were scheduled to graduate. So Sulkowicz, with the help of her friends, carried her mattress in the processional, continuing her protest. According to The Columbia Daily Spectator, the school’s administration emailed seniors on Monday saying, “Graduates should not bring into the ceremonial area large objects which could interfere with the proceedings or create discomfort to others in close, crowded spaces shared by thousands of people.” Sulkowicz disregarded this warning and brought her mattress on stage. According to a tweet from Teo Armus, the Deputy News Editor at the Columbia Spectator, “Emma Sulkowicz did not shake hands with President Lee Bollinger when she went on stage.”

What you said is basically true with regard to date or acquaintance rape. Stranger rape cases are much easier to prove, though often harder to find the suspect.
Not to be indelicate, but I’ve run across these claims of specific injuries associated with rape, but not what they are.
Don’t need to post, but would appreciate a link. Curious how such injuries would differ greatly from those associated with consensual rough sex, which some of the darker corners of the interwebs will demonstrate quite a few women are into. Or at least posters claiming to be female. L)

I have a daughter who just finished her sophomore year at Columbia. I’ve been told that Emma is the spoiled, adopted child of a wealthy New York family. She’s an entitled prig who’s used to getting her way.

Security should have stopped that witch & her friends when they saw the mattress, banned them from the ceremony, & mailed her the diploma.
This witch disrupted a rare, precious moment in the lives of the graduates & their families. Shame on her & the school officials who allowed it. Will future graduations become a circus for the “aggrieved”?
A responsible university president would have had a special detail of campus cops waiting for her arrival, expecting her to create a commotion. They should have barred her entrance with the mattress, & arrested her if she refused to comply.
I hope that man’s lawsuit impoverishes the witch & forces Bollinger out of his job. I’d also like to see these new alumni & their families complain publicly about the disrespect & disruption allow to taint a dignified ceremony.

I was following the case heavily and watched the press conference when it happened. It was shocking and completely spot on. There’s probably some YouTube video that has it. After the word “innocent” was used, all the legal talking heads were going on and on about it.
From what I’ve read, years ago Japanese prostitutes used to carry a mattress on their backs to service customers easier in dark places.
Part of it is that prosecutors don't want to give the woman an incentive to hold on to her story to the bitter end. I would go with no prosecution if she voluntarily recants, but prosecute if evidence shows she lied.
I read one article that claimed that rape accusations essentially come down to a “he said—she said” scenario, because the rape kit only shows that an act took place, not that it was rape. That isn’t quite true. During rape, a woman is uncooperative, which leads to certain stereotypical injuries. I’d say that the absence of those injuries should make an alleged rape that much harder to prosecute.
Forcible rape where the woman is actively struggling against the rapist should show signs of that struggle.
Rape where the rapist secures cooperation by threatening injury or death if she does not actively cooperate, might not show signs of force.

Thanks, but from what I can see that is a prosecutor dropping charges due to a lack of evidence. That’s quite different from a court producing a verdict of absolute innocence after a trial.
Lots and lots of people have charges dropped against them. A lot of them are in fact guilty of the accusation.
