Washington (CNN)In a rare joint action with attorneys general for each of the 50 states, the Federal Trade Commission says four cancer charities run by extended members of the same family conned donors out of $187 million from 2008 through 2012 and spent almost nothing to help actual cancer patients. Federal Trade Commission: Four cancer charities a sham

Federal Trade Commission: Four cancer charities a sham Each of the charities charged were the subject of extensive reporting by CNN in 2013. And in each instance, none of the four charities would comment. We were ordered out of the building at the Cancer Fund of America in Knoxville, Tennessee, and were the object of an obscene gesture by the CEO of The Breast Cancer Society in Mesa, Arizona.

If you want to give to a cancer center that does great work, MD Anderson is my first choice; especially since I am being treated there.

Oh, my husband gets SO MAD at solicitors, especially the businesses cold-calling! He chews them out, using the “you’re illegal - you’re not supposed to be calling at all!” and “if you won’t stick to the rules how do I know you’ll do anything right for me?” arguments! He’s really nasty. (I just can’t do that.)

This has regularly happened for several years now. I’ve been wondering if it’s all a joke.

And really, it should not be the purview of gov to handle this. I really don’t know why we would waste the effort and dollars to ensure no one cold-calls people.

That Do Not Call Registry is a total joke..we sign up for it all the time and every single day we get phone calls from “Name Not Found” and surveys and people soliciting money its very annoying we get at least 10+ calls per day..we already had 2 and the morning just started

Even though we have been a bit strapped I felt guilty so said I would “pledge” to send money.

I was called by one of the BC charities repeatedly. One time, I explained to the caller that, unfortunately, I was a BC patient myself (at the time) and had many medical bills so I could not donate.

You wouldn't believe what the caller said then: She said, "Well, as a patient yourself, you understand why it's so important to give to this charity." When I explained again that I had no money to spare, she said, "It wouldn't have to be much. What about $25?"

I couldn't believe how bold she was. lol

Same here. Most of the calls are scams. The scam artists hook up somehow through a local number, so it appears as if the call is local. But it's really from someplace halfway across the world.

My personal favorite is a scam called "One Stop E-Solutions." They call and say, "I'm calling from the computer center. There's a virus, and we're calling everyone to check their computers. Are you near your computer now? We'll give you some codes to enter to make sure your computer is clear." LOL.

I tell ya those telemarketers are getting smarter and smarter..what they do here in LA is they call from local numbers, like 818 and 323 so you think someone that you know is actually calling you, but the second you answer the phone and you hear that silence, you know its a telemarketer..or the IRS calling demanding their money..you know how many times Ive gotten phone calls from the “IRS” saying that I owe them money..so I play along, saying “Oh I guess you found out Im a Conservative so your after my money, screw you” LOL..or from “Computer repair companies” claiming that I have a horrible horrible virus in my PC that can only be fixed if I Give them 25 bucks so I say “Hold on a sec while I get my credit card..click”

LOL. Same here, on the east coast. All day long, the phone rings. I ignore it completely because all of the calls are from the same types of scam artists you mentioned. And, just as you wrote, the silence at the beginning of the call is a dead giveaway. lol

I was amazed I did not even bring up my sister’s IBC and use it against them. After all, she would be gone within a month (and yes, she lived just 5 min from me and I was there at that moment, so it was very intimate in my life).

One time, my own phone number showed up on the display. It looked like the call was from my number... to my number. Somehow they made the call hook through my own number.

As a result of all this, my own children never really learned how to answer a phone properly because they were raised to ignore the phone. lol

To this day, my sons, now in their teens, still approach the phone with suspicion, look at the number displayed, and then discuss it for a while: “I don’t recognize this number. Do you? Should we pick it up?” Whenever they do pick up the receiver, they won’t say “hello” right away. Instead, they just listen... for that second of silence... lol.

The only time they felt comfortable with the phone was one day when I let them have some fun with the scam “computer center” guys who called. ;-) lol

If it was the same BC charity that was calling me, they were really pushy. If you had mentioned your sister’s having IBC, the “charity” caller might’ve even pushed harder. It was as if the callers lacked a moral conscience. I’m sorry about your sister. IBC is fierce. :-(
