BLM plan to close over 1,000 public routes riles western Colorado

A plan that will close nearly 2,000 miles of public roads that have previously been open for use by the people of Mesa County is creating a public backlash against the Grand Junction field office of the federal Bureau of Land Management.

The BLM’s resource management plans (RMP) regulate the access and types of traffic allowed on roads on public lands. Road maintenance and seasonal closures are also detailed in such plans.

But the most recent RMP in Mesa County indicates the BLM’s intent to limit access to public roads which have traditionally been open to motorized, horse, and foot traffic. Accessible routes will decrease from the current 3,469 miles to just 1,777. The BLM has not offered a clear justification for its planned road closures, which has left many in Mesa County frustrated and baffled.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported that people with physical disabilities are especially troubled by the BLM’s plans.

...

There also appears to be conflicts between federal law and the BLM’s proposed closures. According to Brandon Siegfried, the President of the Public Lands Access Association,—as quoted in the Daily Sentinel—“Most of the routes facing closure were established 50 years ago or more. Federal law requires the BLM to treat such historic routes like highways, which cannot be closed through a resource management plan.”

Lessee here, BLM went up against “right-wing bitter clingers” and got an armed reply.

BLM now goes up against progressive fellow travelers - what kind of response you think they’ll get - a barrage of tweets and arugula?

Where is the county Sheriff? He should be out there keeping the roads open.

Agenda 21 crap.

You've got that right. Private land ownership and public land access are two of the main pillars that support a free society. When formerly "public" lands are withheld from the public, or access is denied or made more difficult, you can bet some utopian has mapped out a new, restrictive definition of what we're allowed.

The excuses for doing so always sound good on the surface, but the net result is always the same; Less for you. More for them.

Knock the gates down and prevent them from being replaced.

Unfortunately, due to civil service laws, they’d just show up somewhere else. I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but these problems will not be rectified with the same tactics we’ve been using for the past hundred years. “Firing,” as a punishment only works in private business. Consider all the congressmen, senators, cabinet members and high-ranking staff that have been recalled, voted out or otherwise forced to leave their jobs. They just took their slap on the wrist and moved into some highly paid lobbying position.

The BLM keeps claiming that they are only closing 800 miles, and it's all redundant trails, but in both cases, this is not true.

They are physically closing a little over 800 miles - that's completely closed - to foot traffic, motorized use, etc. Shutdown and lost forever. The rest of the trails are being "closed" due to use changes. For example, there is a road in Unaweep Canyon that I use quite frequently to get back in the sticks. If BLM gets their way, I'll no longer be able to do so. Only those with "Administrative Use" would be able to use that road. Well, they didn't exactly CLOSE it, but it will be closed to me, so...

And the redundant claim? Total hogwash. I've seen the proposed closures, and most will cut a large swath of access out to hunters, hikers, handicapped visitors and more.

Dear BLM: GET OFF MY LAWN

There’s some BLM land near me. Burglars and police use it as a route to avoid “No Trespassing” signs that are on private road entrances. From there, they cruise around, casing private properties.

Other than that, the real issue behind BLM land in the West is tourism revenues. Tourism will continue to slow down, though. Everyone’s staying closer to home for the purpose of spending their time and money getting ready for TEOTWAWKI instead.

Over the years I have had one favorite trail after another closed to use. Just add more to the list. The top of the world trail at Rampart was the biggest loss so far.

In CO statute, BTW, it’s explicit, that signs are not required to enforce the law against trespassing. I’ve been disseminating some information on installing low-cost camera systems for landowners.

As for the BLM lands, sell them. Privatize them all.

Not only are these statists closing historical public trails to foot traffic, they also close public lands that historically were approved / used for grazing, logging, etc.

As they promote amnesty and flood the country [ 250 million people here in 1990 - now over 330 million people ] , our public roads, schools, hospitals, trails, etc. are getting more crowded.

Removing existing roads and trails as well as accessible public lands will make the mess even worse: As the lefties hope and planned.

Get ready for the EPA to try harder to steal your water rights and private property rights.
