Last night in Georgia, Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% spoke to the delegates at the Georgia Republican Convention.
Regular readers of RedState know that the Speaker of the House in Georgia, collaborating with gay rights activists, left-wing Democrats, and big business, scuttled a state version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Action in exchange for Democrat votes on a billion dollar tax increase.
If conservatives wanted RFRA passed in Georgia, the Speaker demanded they gut the legislation with “anti-discrimination” language that would actually expand protected classes in Georgia for the left.
Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% spoke last night and he called B.S. on the antics. He pointed to Indiana and Arkansas and assailed Republicans for hiding from the fight against the Democrat-Big Business coalition.
I’m told it did not go over well with Republican leaders, but it went over very well with the base of the party, which this afternoon is expected to endorse exactly what Cruz called for — real religious liberty protections.
Good for the Senator.
I see a lot of over-reaction here on FR about those little slivers of votes.
The base is where everyone wins or loses.
Not the tiny little voting groups.

Lets just say he thinks they need to go back home and start over. He wants them to do it right, like he did.

I think that this is the last time that our political candidates will be able to “offend” the Hispanic voter. There are few enough of them eligible to vote who do so. The ones who do, in my long and wide experience with Mexican Americans who do vote leads me to believe that they just need a little nudge to remind them that too many anybodies too fast into our country diminishes opportunity for their kids and grandkids just like everyone else.
Further, the recent class of illegal entrants from everywhere, and especially Mexico, are NOT America lovers as were prior immigrants. They are America haters like Obama.
Cruz may be a Cuban chauvinist who just does not understand the Mexican mind. Mexicans do not think like Cubans and usually do not even like Cubans or Puerto Ricans or South Americans. He will get a very small part of the Mexican vote no matter how lightly he treds with them.
The Mexican soul is very Mexican proud. For the most part, that is a good thing, until you get to the current crop of younger Mexicans on both sides of the border who have been propagandized into hating America and Americans and are on a mission to take what they have been misled to believe America stole from them in the Mexican American war. They do not realize that America agreed to and did pay Mexico fifty million dollars in gold for almost all of the American southwest.
We help them stay to our own destruction. This is our last election to stave them off.

I don’t think he was “storing up” his courage, Mariner. This is a man of uncommon principle and conviction. He has no political fear, really. He just does what he thinks is right-
Now, take your situation, for instance. Sen. Cruz undoubtedly knows he’s losing votes from that constituency who vehemently oppose this trade deal. But, he’s not going to change his position to fraudulently procure those votes.
It would be so easy to go the other way- pander- do the politic thing. Vote against it, get your vote- and then when he gets in office, do the “switcheroo.” That’s what all the others would do.
But, not Ted Cruz. He’s telling you straight on, -”sorry Mariner, I’m not going to lie to you- I can’t come with you on this one.”
That’s integrity— and that’s fearless.
Small government types are split on a big government response to immigration. Single issue immigration voters should realize this. There are many issues to consider.
Strategy and tactics also need to be considered. If there is an SEC primary, will those outside the establishment split their vote between 5 (or 10) candidates and let the establishment candidate win? We need a criteria on which candidate to unite around. Does anyone have a criteria better than this?
Since candidates need signatures to get on the ballot, the candidates who have the most signatures have proven they know how to build a winning campaign. The candidates who just barely squeak by to get on the ballot show they don’t have a winning campaign, regardless of how great they are on the issues.
So we vote the weak candidates off the island in Jan-Feb 2016.

His stance on legal immigration gives him political cover to do the real work of taking on illegal immigration. We can fine tune the legal system later. It’s illegal immigration that threatens to fundamentally alter the nature of the country. That’s what that needs to be dealt with seriously and quickly.

I think you’re right. By his legal training, he’s methodically building his case. And when he finally presents it, it will attempt to make it so compelling as to leave no question as to the verdict. And, it will surprise people.
Disagree. Cruz has said will retain illegals.
I believe 40% of Hispanics voted for him in Texas senate election and he had the same views then as now.

Also read what he did on Gang of Eight bill. He took away only citizenship, left in retention of illegals.
Watch what he does.
Let’s close the border and stop new illegal immigrations first. Be sure the ones already here will not be rewarded (citizenship, financial aides, etc.) for breaking the law. Then we can have a real discussion what we are going to do with them.

IMO obsessing about H1b visas instead of focusing on illegal immigration would be like straining at a knat and swallowing a camel. The illegal immigration problem is HUGE. Temporary work visas don’t compare. I don’t understand why Walker’s position of having illegals pay a $100 fine and then giving them a path to citizenship is preferable to Cruz’s no path to citizenship for illegals.
