Updated at 12:19 PM CDT on Friday, May 15, 2015 Andrea Zopp has made up her mind about a run for U.S. Senate.
"Yes. I'm running," the Chicago Urban League president and CEO confirmed to Ward Room on Friday.
Zopp said she will challenge Sen. Mark Kirk in next year's election and plans to make a formal announcement in the next couple weeks.
During an interview last month with NBC 5, Zopp said she can "really bring something to the race."
From Harvard Law School, she became the first deputy at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, a corporate lawyer and now head of the Urban League. She also has been appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to the Chicago School Board.
"I'm excited about the opportunity," she said during an interview last month, "and I think I could really make a difference in Illinois and in this role."
Zopp isn't the only potential Democrat in the race. Congressman Robin Kelly and Sen. Napoleon Harris, a former professional football player, may also consider a bid.
Kirk this week launched the first television ads of his 2016 re-election bid. They focused on recovering from a stroke.
Andrea Zopp...knew it without looking. Ugly, that is.....
We have vote for Kirk because of the magical R!!
Kirk is a Democrat in an R jersey, he won’t be missed.
Say goodbye to this Senate seat. Kirk should drop out and let a true conservative run to at least give us chance. Otherwise, Duckworth will win easily no matter what Zoppo thinks.
Just to remind you, Kirk was one of ten Republicans that voted for Loretta Lynch.
‘Nuff said.
You would think that after a “near death” experience, he would have changed his ways.
“Near death” experience does not register with a liberal.
The more Dems in the Primary race, spending money against each other, and accusing each other, the better for us.
Near death experience makes a lieberal worry about s/he/it’s “legacy. That means even more determination to destroy America’s proven values.
I would not advise voting for Kirk simply because he has a “R” after his name, but the reality is that in some states the best you can hope for is a RINO, and Illinois is one of those states.
Kirk may not come close to passing any purity tests but he would be a much more reliable conservative vote than the democRAT alternative considering that person would vote conservative 0% of the time.
Plus you need to look at the big picture. If we are able to get a Walker or Cruz elected in 2016 than having a republican controlled congress would help them actually implement their agenda much more easily than if you have a democratic controlled senate to muck things up.
I mean if Kirk was running in Utah or Wyoming than sure I would be all on board with kicking Kirk to the curb and finding a more conservative alternative, but the reality is he is running for US senator from Illinois.
You really think a “true” conservative is going to have a better shot of winning statewide in Illinois than Mark Kirk ?
You are aware the city of Chicago is located in the state of Illinois ?
That’s the difference between democrats and republicans. Democrats don’t have purity tests for the most part. Sure they will whine and complain now and than on liberal blogs when a “ blue dog “ doesn’t vote the liberal agenda and it’s usually on some issue that really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things, but they still vote for that person anyways because they know on the big stuff like Obamacare that the vast majority of the time the blue dogs and rinos both will vote with their party.
Kirk is more (D) than many D’s.
Yeah, Mark Kirk is toast. I cannot in good conscience vote for the scum bag. And there are a hell of a lot of Illinois conservatives who share that sentiment.
Ping
So what your saying is that since you can’t bring yourself to vote for Kirk because he is not conservative enough than you will give a 1/2 vote to Tammy Duckworth because by not voting for Kirk that is exactly what your doing.
I am not trying to bust your chops over it. This is still America for the time being at least so you can vote how you choose. It’s just kinda odd to hear a “conservative” such as yourself say they will be voting for someone as liberal as Tammy Duckworth.
That kind of BS will not fly any longer.
Refusal to vote for Democrats in R jerseys does not equate to support for Democrats in D jerseys.
It’s just a refusal to vote for liberals.
