Percentage of African-Americans in U.S. Police Departments Remains Flat Since 2007

But police hiring of other minorities has increased, report shows

The percentage of African-Americans in U.S. police departments has remained flat since before the recession, even as police hiring of other minorities has increased, according to a U.S. Department of Justice survey released Thursday.

A lack of black officers, especially in communities with large African-American populations, has been cited frequently in the wake of police-involved deaths of black residents that sparked riots in cities from Ferguson, Mo., to Baltimore in the past year.

Black officers make up just 12% of all local police officers, the survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics showed. The overall U.S. black population is 13.2%, according to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Departments struggle to recruit and retain African-Americans in part because of black distrust of police departments and possibly outdated criteria for employment, according to researchers who have studied the issue.

“The numbers are not so surprising. We’ve known that this is an issue,” said Anne Kringen, a criminal justice scholar at University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn. But she said the report doesn’t address why recruitment has remained stagnant.

That’s why they need to hire five foot three, one hundred and twenty pound women. We all know from watching TV cop shows that any little woman can beat the holy crap out of five or six huge men with no effort involved.

It would be interesting to know the percentage of the population made up of black males not in jail.

As the percentage distribution of racial population groups changes the composition of the work force will lag behind until retirements create openings.

(Just as quality declined at MSNBC when “voices of oppression” had to be added to their lineup.)

I must protest this sentence, it seems self-contradictory. How could quality decline at MSNBC? When WAS there any quality at MSNBC? It is like reporting a decline in the Unicorn population.

Why would any black person want to become an “Uncle Tom” and go to work for “the man”?

This is total crap and intentional mis-reporting. First, Blacks make up 17%~21% of the US population and second, they represent 60% of most big chitty police departments.

What surprises me is that the WSJ would be reporting these lies.

Yes, it appears that the writers have an agenda.

Many police departments have in the past required at least a two-year college degree and some officers were hired having four-year degrees.

But some studies have found that the college educated officers become bored with the routine of every day police work and decide to leave public sector employment.

Although with the Obama economy and lack of jobs today most veteran police officers are trying to complete their minimum retirement time for pensions and get out of policing while they still can, understanding what is coming with the Obama government targeting local police.

The media are always reporting that “too many blacks” are stopped for “driving while black”, and some police departments are under court order to reduce those percentages by trying hard to find people other than blacks to stop.

However, the problem becomes when policing an either all black or majority black community the only way to comply is to no longer stop blacks or wait for the other races or the lone white guy to pass through the community and stop them.

Their percentage in the population is roughly their percentage in policing. What's the problem?

Obviously White cops can't police minority neighborhoods. Should black cops be patrolling White neighborhoods?

In Chicago the police officers with seniority bid for working in the few remaining lower crime neighborhoods and day shifts, but the black officers complain that they are then forced to work in the high-crime (black) neighborhoods when they prefer to work in the White, lower-crime neighborhoods.

Two questions that must be answered before we can have this discussion.

How many African Americans WANT to be cops?

How many AAs QUALIFY to be cops (clean record, pass tests)?

I’ll bet AA representation in police work is very similar to the answers to those questions.

There's also a slight problem for our sunburned Amish thug “utes” — FELONY convictions and prison time is hardly a job resume enhancement except in Democrat-run cities.

12% is about right...their entire population is about that, and it includes all those half white/half black people that suddenly morph into “black” period....
