Low-skilled jobs are the ones that have disappeared: Fed study (Put your boots on)

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch)—Since the Great Recession ended in 2009, commentators have often railed against an economy that seemed to only create lowest-wage jobs. But a new study of labor market data by the Kansas City Fed has found the opposite is true. The study concludes that job growth has been strong for middle-skill and high-skill workers, but has remained weak for low-skill jobs. Middle-skill jobs rebounded in the first two years of the recovery and high-skilled jobs started to return in 2012, according to the study, which analyzed quarterly data from the Labor Department’s household survey. Growth in the upper two sectors has improved in each of the past three years, the study found. “Low-skill jobs remain the one segment of the labor market that has yet to return to prerecession growth levels,” the study concluded. Low-skilled jobs are typically service oriented, such as food-preparation, cleaning services, and security.

There are plenty of low-skilled jobs. They just go to immigrants now.

It’s quite possibly true. It is the low skilled jobs that are being automated. You can into many businesses and see one cashier monitoring 6-12 automated checkouts when there would have been at least 4 cashiers previously.

I guess we can start sending all the immigrant fruit and veggie pickers back home.

Low-skilled jobs are typically service oriented,

My service industry job is far from low skill. And there are many more available if I feel the need to move on to down the road motors.

What is really meant is "Low Skill - HIGH WAGE jobs, such as unionized factory work.

They are amongst those that are automated first, as they save the most money.

Yes, there are plenty of "Low Skill - Low Wage" jobs.

You got that right.

The other factor is ever-increasing government regulation/meddling in private employment contracts. They've made hiring into a colossal hassle, and prohibitively expensive.

People forget that the majority of jobs in this country still are provided by small family businesses. And government now has them in a choke hold.

Child care, elder care, cleaning, there’s plenty of work that can be done by people with almost no skills.

Low skilled jobs are service jobs. These are usually people the jobs that people in high or middle skilled jobs pay to have done.

But what if those people are electing to do those jobs themselves to save money?
