You can bet if he were a member of the Tea Party this would have been the exact headline:
“Tea Party extremist kills 8 in train crash”

From this photo, he is obviously a psycho.

I hope the people who hired him, trained him, and reviewed him are all co defendants.

90% chance this was operator incompetence, 10% chance it was operator malice.

Back in 1999, when I was involved in freight and passenger rail advocacy, I had lunch with an Amtrak upper level manager who had broken in during the early days of Amtrak by driving ancient GG-1 electric locomotives, inherited from the Pennsylvania Railroad, on the Northeast Corridor. He said the job was boring and not at all romantic. For one thing, the interiors of the old GG-1's were as dark as a medieval cathedral.

But that was before Amtrak rebuilt the Corridor to serious high speed standards. There was a certain tolerance for error 40 years ago. That tolerance is gone. An engineer on a modern electric locomotive on the Northeast Corridor has to be on his wits every mile of the journey.

It's obvious that Mr. Bostian wasn't paying attention. That's exactly what happened in 1943 when the Pennsylvania Railroad's hotshot Congressional Limited went off the tracks at that same place and killed 79 people.

Exactly. How cute, he loved trains ... they were a passion.

I guess he was too dense to realize 100 mph around a 50 mph turn was bad.

a neighbor, Miriam Mierov, described him as “a really sweet person.”

“He’s always polite,” she said. “He holds the elevator when he sees me.”

Friends have posted encouraging words on Mr. Bostian’s Facebook profile in the days after the crash. A friend whose profile said he was also an engineer at Amtrak wrote of the crash, “Yes, it happened to you but it could have been any one of us and you are not alone.”

Compare the above kid glove treatment to what you'd be reading if Brandon Bostian had been a Tea Partier, Republican or NRA activist.

Very interesting comment Publius. That its the same curve is fascinating. That’s a terrible death toll.

somebody needs to remind him that he applied the brake, strongly apparently, and he was the engineer, and the train was going way too fast, so he MUST HAVE done something wrong, poor thing...

Thanks for the interesting comments—this is why FR is a great site. Unfortunately, the substance is getting thin. Too many comedians here now.

My Next Door Neighbor is a Freight Train Engineer.
He takes his responsibilities very seriously.

Now Liberals are making excuses for the Gross Incompetence if this particular Person? The guys lack of Judgment and Gross Incompetence killed eight people and maimed hundreds.

In a rational world, the Idiots who wrote this Article would be begging for loose change on a Street Corner and the Perp would be sitting in a Cell.

I sit here thinking the Twilight Zone is our new Reality.
I’m sorry folks, America’s best days are behind her,

GG1 4876 in 1953 lost it’s brakes and crashed into Union Station in Washington and fell through the floor.

The great GG1 helped the USA win WWII.

A marvel of engineering in it’s day and beautiful engine.

This is why the diseased mind of male queers should never be allowed the responsibility for the lives of other people. The German airline pilot that murdered more than a 100 succeeded, this deviant failed to kill all passengers.

Why did he speed up the train from 70 to 105 instead of slowing it from 70 to 55? It was either:
1) Deliberate
2) The train had sudden acceleration syndrome triggered at just the right time to derail.
