Pro-life groups, politicians hail House passage of 20-week abortion ban

After months of wrangling, pro-life politicians and outside organizations praised the House for passing HR. 36, the "Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act," which aims to ban most abortions after 20 weeks.

The final vote was 242-184, with one Republican voting "present." Four Democrats voted for the bill, and four Republicans against it.

“I think America is at its best when we are standing up for the least among us," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, said in a statement released after the vote. "This debate is long overdue." The senator is expected to introduce similar legislation in the Senate.

The vote took place on the two-year anniversary of the murder conviction of late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell, and was something pro-life groups had pushed for several months. Rep. Mike Kelly, a Republican from Gosnell's state of Pennsylvania, invoked the convict in comments on the House floor just before the vote took place.

"Scientific evidence now shows that unborn babies can feel pain by 20 weeks post-fertilization, and likely even earlier," said Kelly. "A late term abortion is an excruciatingly painful and inhumane act against children waiting to be born and their mothers."

Citing concern for the safety of women - "women terminating pregnancies at 20 weeks are 35 times more likely to die from abortion than they are in the first trimester, and 91 times more likely to die from abortion at 21 weeks or beyond," according to Kelly - the congressman said that "overwhelmingly, most Americans...support legislation to protect these innocent people."

This was the bill, now amended, that was pulled from the floor on Jan 22. I do not see a roll call, yet. Not absolutely certain who the 9 aisle=crossers are. And about 8 more absent.

yeah, some DEMS would catch total Hell from the locals if they voted for this. But for most ... if would be a political plus ... yet they vote NO. Even those who could care less, do it to stay in the club.

I don’t think anyone expects this to become law in the next 2 years.

But it is supported by the pro-life community nationally. It is not an advanced concept to pass bills and push them along as far as you can go ...

it puts the opposition on record. Each and everyone of them including the DEMS who will filibuster this ... it will die in the cloture vote. There are not 60 yes votes in the Senate. not this year.

20 weeks... 140 days... 10 days shy of 5 months... halfway to delivery...

And Democrats bitch about the “mean Republicans...” Well, those Democrats can go to Hell.

and for 42 years.

... and at least here in Conn., the vast majority of church-going pro-lifers have reacted by becoming inactive in “civics” ...

Your thoughts were identical to mine, or perhaps vice versa would be more accurate.

At any rate, almost five months and this is cause for celebration?

Perhaps it is, because it will set at least some limits.

Gestation (length of pregnancy) is about nine months, thus the trimester approach to breaking down the growth of the fetus during pregnancy. The exact length varies, and the actual gestation period is at times hard to pinpoint because women don’t always know the exact date of impregnation.

This is one resource I found on the subject.

The “20 week ban” is pretty political and watered down from the vision of January’s “March for Life” founder Nellie Gray, who envisioned a Human Life Amendment protecting human life from the moment of conception.

The National Right To Life Committee and GOP Establishment are tied at the hip and they roll this thing out to use as a Karl Rove emotional “wedge issue” to keep us all on the Republican plantation.

Nellie Gray may have envisioned it, but America rejected it. The political class.

Washington DC is occupied territory of the abortion movement.

You’re right; it’s a gesture, but a noble gesture nonetheless. It’s a start.

This was nothing more than a symbolic act. Even if it passes the Senate, the Liberal Messiah would veto it within a minute of it reaching His desk and there’s no chance of a veto override.

Its not meant to pass. this is only being done so Republicans can boost their conservative ratings. I mean, they have capitulated on every single campaign promise they made. They need to do something to rally low information voters. If they wanted this to pass, they would tie to must pass legislation, but that would anger their “friends” on the other side of the aisle, and they would have to surrender in defeat once again.

From what was posted on the compromise here at Free Republic earlier this week, it only adds a mild inconvenience to obtaining a late term abortion. All a woman as to do is claim she was raped, and get medical treatment, or counseling at least 48 hours before the abortion. It originally required the woman to report the rape when it happened, which would have prevented some late term abortions. This isn’t going to stop anything.

The GOPe is trying to pretend conservatism on social issues as gay marriage comes down the tracks like a freight train and the corporate interests that back the Republican Party veto any attempts to protect First Amendment rights of people who object to gay marriage with religious freedom legislation.

This was proven with Jan Brewer’s veto in Arizona last year of religious freedom legislation denounced by John McCain and Mitt Romney.

Then this year the GOP governors in Indiana and Arkansas caved on similar legislation under big business pressure.

The business elites behind the GOPe on this free trade legislation, amnesty for illegals and so on see the First Amendment as a diaper wipe for religiously conservative people in this country.

That is why the Republican Party has to pretend with this fake abortion legislation.
