That will teach them to honk at the policeman without his permission. A Hillsborough County Deputy Sheriff taught me a similar lesson a few years back. I remember it like it was yesterday.

They are going to pay out big money for this.I assume you mean the police department or county which actually means the tax payer. If this shakes out as true (from the "victims" stand point); that "cop" should live in poverty for the rest of his life paying the county back.

How could they have known it was a police officer? He was off duty, in his own vehicle with his wife. They were not being stupid, they honked at a guy who was headed toward them in their lane.

The lesson leaned here: never get out of your car “to explain” why you beeped at another driver. Especially if they are tailgating you.
Either call 911 or get to a nearby police station if possible.
