This article is alarmist. The painting with the article shows a 4-5000 mile wide projectile hitting North Africa and the Med Sea.
On the plus side, this will answer the question of what to do about Libya. There are some downsides to note, as well.

By comparison, the earth is 93M miles from the son and the moon is about 238-239,000 miles from the earth. We should be okay unless we have some asteroid pool action going on...
