Louie Gohmert Gets Why Some Texans Are Worried About a Military Takeover
National Journal ^ | May 5, 2015 | Matt Berman

Posted on 05/05/2015 6:26:24 PM PDT by Kaslin

The Texas congressman is joining others in his state calling for the Pentagon to alter the Jade Helm 15 military exercises.

May 5, 2015 U.S. Special Operations Command is preparing to launch a five-month, multi-state exercise across private and public land to prepare Army special forces for threats anywhere in the world. Or at least that's what the Pentagon would want you to believe. Officials and citizens in Texas, one of the states involved, see something potentially more nefarious in the exercise, dubbed Jade Helm 15. And now Rep. Louie Gohmert is joining them.

"Over the past few weeks, my office has been inundated with calls referring to the Jade Helm 15 military exercise scheduled to take place between July 15 and September 15, 2015," Gohmert said in a Tuesday statement. "This military practice has some concerned that the U.S. Army is preparing for modern-day martial law. Certainly, I can understand these concerns."

"When leaders within the current administration believe that major threats to the country include those who support the Constitution, are military veterans, or even 'cling to guns or religion,' patriotic Americans have reason to be concerned," Gohmert wrote.

This type of conspiracy theories is so incredibly idiotic that anyone believing it should be committed.

All y’all, keep your eyes open on this one, and don’t let up on those who would try to give excuses...

folks here who were in the military and seen such exercises haven’t seen them on such a scale and under a regime such as the one we have now.

I’ve seen this kind of political operation before, both in events elsewhere in the past and in histories of similar operations. Here’s what’s being done.

Certain scared, extremely influential political constituents, their pocket politicians and sponsored media folks are pushing the conspiracy theory. They’re hoping that some of the least intelligent individuals with rifles will cause incidents, and you know why. Some of the more moronic dupes or trolls have already threatened to open fire on the soldiers (who won’t even have live ammunition).

Remember that there are very influential constituents in both political parties who want to disarm all but their own kind. They want to disarm the middle class. It’s not only Democrats. And don’t assume that you are one of those very influential constituents or very special to them.

Many who participate on all kinds of discussion boards (including this one) while wanting laws against middle class Americans owning rifles are adding lies to the stories (dishonest claims that soldiers are trespassing on private, residential properties, using artillery simulators next to private homes, etc.). The claims were made long before the exercise started.

I participated in an exercise like that during the years of the George H. W. Bush Administration. We were not practicing to take over the world. We were practicing to protect friendly locals and their infrastructure, wherever those friendly locals may be in the future. The locals enjoyed seeing us.

The problem now is that many of the locals here and there are not so friendly. Neighborhood guy is a commando in his own mind, and he’s looking for trouble.

Of all the conspiracy theories I have read over the years, the may be the most ridiculous. And boy is that saying something.

Quite glad to see it has gained little traction here.

"Secondly, its something to watch the politicians tiptoe around the 500 lb gorilla in the living room: the possibility of Texas secessipn."

I grew up in Texas, and that's pretty funny. IMO, real Texans should eject the millions who migrated from other states for jobs over the past few decades. Then, there wouldn't be any crazy talk there.

"Run this exercise in Mexico."

Mexicans have already seen U.S. soldiers many times and appreciated our presence and money.

Bravo Sierra, robowombat! See the next to the last paragraph in comment #25. Much larger exercises have always been conducted within the continental U.S.

But have it your way. Drive on with your propaganda exercise to make a few idiots go off half-cocked and usher in more gun control.

I think your assessment is probably right:

They’re hoping that some of the least intelligent individuals with rifles will cause incidents, and you know why. Some of the more moronic dupes or trolls have already threatened to open fire on the soldiers (who won’t even have live ammunition).

Their aim is to disarm the middle class.

I’m resposting my comment from another thread:

I know it may seem that I am speaking out of both sides of my mouth, but I see both sides—I am on both sides. Military doctrine has changed dramatically over the past few decades. The “we never did it that way when I was in,” doesn’t pass muster. Our military now operates as a unified force under combatant commands. It works well in that environment: one force; one fight. We are all still in different services, but we fight under one commander. And yes, we still swear oaths to protect the country from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The problem is that many conservatives (rightly) fear who may be making that decision at the federal level, and an expanded chain of command that excludes local constituencies. There is a danger that the unified command structure be used to integrate all levels of military and law enforcement into a single chain of command, rather than continuing to work cooperatively. This is not only confusing, but totally illegal. Law enforcement and military have distinctly different jobs and they cannot be mixed without horrific consequences. The definition of police state is a state where the police and military have no distinction.

I don’t think we are there, but there is reason to raise a flag and ask the questions. However, acting like Alex Jones disciples is not solution either. Write letters; go to conferences; research modern warfare and policing. Find out what is happening and respond in a reasonable manner.

You can’t have it both ways. These same folks, who are complaining now, will be complaining that we didn’t figure out how to respond to an attack or national disaster that taxes our resources and personnel. And remember, many, if not most of us, are the same as you. We are here to defend the country and are working in an asymmetric environment that requires that we work to strengthen, not break, the very system that we have sworn to protect.

It’s because there is really nothing to it.

Or enlisted men just know they are doing a training exercise, then a catastrophe, then they are thrown out into the field.

Thank you for the great explanation. There is one part that needs further information, though.

"Law enforcement and military have distinctly different jobs and they cannot be mixed without horrific consequences."

They couldn't be the same, because that would be impossible. The differences between real soldier (not REMF) training and police training are vast. Many police--like many other civilians--are only trying to emulate soldiers by appearances. One difference in appearances continues to stand out, though.

Look at the obvious difference in the shapes of their bodies. Which ones have bodies in the shape of a zero? Which ones have upper bodies more in the shape of a V?

"The definition of police state is a state where the police and military have no distinction."

Not quite.

From WordNet (r) 3.0 (2006) :

police state
n 1: a country that maintains repressive control over the people by means of police (especially secret police)

Same here:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/police%20state

Any combat soldiers could run around my rather large yard many times. Most civilian police individuals couldn't do it once. The two train and work very differently in many ways.

Police have their job. Soldiers have theirs. Police have not even begun to train as soldiers.

A police state, though? That depends on what the new, enormous lobby organizations for state and local governments get away with (desires for Article V Conventions, etc.). It also depends on how many Americans are duped by the conspiracy mongers into going off half-cocked and firing across their suburbs (insurrection and the like).

It also depends on how many idiots continue issuing crazy political speech and driving conservatives away from elections. Most Americans reject crazy talk in political speech and aren't as stupid as the socialist political/regulator class believes them to be. Republicans should at least be willing to give up some government employee factions as favored constituencies.

It even depends on whether or not the most influential con$tituent$ change their minds about using police work to stop foreign enemy guerrillas instead of sending soldiers. It's war. We should send military forces. The current practice of trying to fight the "War on Terror" on our own soil with a civilian police surveillance state is foolish.

Don't fear our own soldiers, sailors, Marines or airmen. Fear the attempt by federal-pork-supported state and local socialists to violate your civil (constitutional) rights. And remember that those socialists are disseminating the crazy talk and trying to foment incidents to pass more laws and further violate your rights.

there is a willingness of MOST elected officials as well as the top govt worker class to go along with bammey and his ilk...

you think it would be hard to just close down the internet, rob our bank accounts?..

you think someone would just stop them from doing it, legally?...

no...we have no leaders...we have yellow bellies who if you promised them a high paying safe job in the new regime, they would go along readily....

this new Joint chiefs guy..the Marine...who gets along with bammy so well....doesn't that scare the shit out of everybody, excuse my French.

I’m not saying that police are useless, by the way—only different. They are there to help secure the exercises against fruitcakes, for one. That’s a big job and a great service.

It would have been great to see a better public affairs effort in advance, though. Individual units have done better in foreign countries.
