Gun Bill Passes Oregon House, Moves to Governor’s Desk

Ever since the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn., gun-control advocates have worked hard to close so-called “loopholes” in background-check laws.

Not all the efforts have been successful; gun-rights advocates say such measures are needlessly burdensome and do little to stop violent crime. But last year, Washington state residents voted to toughen the state’s background-check laws. And now the Oregon legislature has done the same.

On Monday, the Oregon House voted 32-28 in support of Senate Bill 941, which requires background checks for all purchasers of guns through private sales. Currently, background checks in Oregon are required only for people buying a firearm from a licensed dealer or at a gun show.

The bill will now move to Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, who said she will sign the bill. Last month, the Oregon senate passed the bill. All 18 Democrats voted to support the bill, and all 12 Republicans voted against it.

Passage of the bill will make Oregon the 12th state to require these checks on sales and transfers among private parties for both handguns and long guns.

If I had my gun store on a boat, how far offshore would I have to go to be out of Oregon territorial waters?

Background checks would not have prevented Sandy Hook.

Wife and I spent 10 days there about fifteen years ago, she was working so I spent a lot of time wandering about Portland. I have never come across a bigger collection of fruits, nuts and arrogance as I did there. Beautiful country when we got out to look around, but the people.........

“Background checks would not have prevented Sandy Hook.”

Thank God not enough people bought the Sandy Hook lie. We never got and still don’t have the truth from the government controlled media, and the government solutions are always designed to turn people into slaves.

This sucks. I don’t live in OR, but hate to see another state suckered by the lies of the gun control freaks. Now all gun sales will be tracked/registered while criminals and madmen laugh at the stupidity of it all.

Bloomberg’s group is going to try to get something similar passed via voter referendum in Arizona next year. Getting that passed in A+-rated AZ would be a major coup for the gun control freaks.

Yep. Bloomberg is going state to state, trying to do what they could not get congress to do after Sandy Hook.

The article is incorrect. State Senator Betsy Johnson (D) voted with the Republicans on this issue as she always has done in the past. She is probably the strongest supporter of the second amendment out there.

Just the geologic gash known as the Willamette Valley. Rural Oregon is largely pro-gun. I’m on the southern coast and my Dem rep voted against this farce. 1 in 8, locally, are licensed to carry, many others do, anyway. But we’re outnumbered, Statewide.

Without the “emergency” rider that the legislators are abusing, this could have been prevented by petition of the people, and a vote would most likely have shot this down. It’s what we did to the legislation allowing for drivers licences for illegals. Went down in flames.
