Police Rethink Long Tradition on Using Force
New York Times ^ | May 4, 2015 | By MATT APUZZO

WASHINGTON — During a training course on defending against knife attacks, a young Salt Lake City police officer asked a question: “How close can somebody get to me before I’m justified in using deadly force?”

Dennis Tueller, the instructor in that class more than three decades ago, decided to find out. In the fall of 1982, he performed a rudimentary series of tests and concluded that an armed attacker who bolted toward an officer could clear 21 feet in the time it took most officers to draw, aim and fire their weapon.

The next spring, Mr. Tueller published his findings in SWAT magazine and transformed police training in the United States. The “21-foot rule” became dogma. . .

People will die at the hands of criminals because of all this Black noise.

Well I would have to say this article is spot on. Law enforcement is so far off track it's hard to imagine it could be corrected before a serious meltdown of which we find ourselves in the opening chapters as we speak.

The police have been trained to escalate nearly every encounter when they should be doing the opposite. Law enforcement today has absolutely zero common sense unless of course the goal is a soviet style police state. The mind set is total control and domination where everyone and everything is seen as a threat. They have completely forgotten that the citizens are the boss, not the other way around.

Every solution in this article is basic common sense that has been known to legitimate law enforcement since the days of Wyatt Earp, it's not some new way of thinking.

I'm glad to see people are starting to figure this out.

Bill Clinton bragged about “putting 100,000 cops on the street” (and teachers, etc. but is was all typical left wing BS, the state/locals had to foot the bill after only 3 years and most didn’t participate).

I predict, at this rate, there will be 100,000 cops quitting these useless forces in lib cities. Let the liberals live with the consequences of their actions.

And they better hope they don’t become refugees and move to my state of TN, we won’t put up with their destruction here.

“People will die at the hands of criminals because of all this Black noise.”

Actually, most people shot by criminals are other criminals. Law abiding citizens do get shot, but it’s more often by cops than criminals.

“I read the article and I came away with a different opinion. My take away is that the cops don’t train enough with preventing situations that require them to decide to “kill or don’t kill.” Think about how many cases we see on this website where a cop goes “full tactical” for no good reason.”

Me too! To me, a good cop is a person who knows how to control a situation and not have to make deadly force the first tool in his bag.

As an example, when confronting a drugged out violent person, the police should invite them to a drum circle.

Correct. But they do help set a tone that potentially filters down to local PDs.

Well, only one police department started the 21 second rule.

So it will only take one to get rid of it.

You may want to do a little research on that.

I survived an anti-Police cultural nightmare in the 60’s and 70’s.

Every form of violent crime exploded.

It took Reagan and Rudy Giuliani almost two decades to put out the fire.

Now I have to live through another one in my old age?

Thanks, Obama. Thanks, Libertarians.

It is not distance, nor weapon, nor size. It is ABILITY and INTENT. Once a person has demonstrated both, then deadly force is a legal option.
