Police Association Has ‘Deep Concerns’ About Prosecutor’s ‘Many Conflicts of Interest’..

...in Freddie Gray Case
The Fraternal Order of Police has suggested that Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby may not be able to run a fair, impartial investigation of the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of police, in part because of her close relationship with the Gray family’s lawyer.

Mosby on Friday announced charges against six Baltimore police officers for manslaughter, second-degree assault and misconduct related to Gray’s death. Gray suffered a fatal spinal injury while in police custody, an event that led to rioting in the city this week.

Just before Mosby announced that charges were filed, the Fraternal Order of Police’s Baltimore City Lodge asked Mosby to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Gray’s death because of her “conflicts of interest” in the case.

“While I have the utmost respect for you and your office, I have very deep concerns about the many conflicts of interest presented by your office conducting an investigation in this case,” wrote Gene Ryan, president of the Baltimore lodge.

“These conflicts include your personal and professional relationship with Gray family attorney, William Murphy, and the lead prosecutor’s connections with members of the local media,” he wrote. “Based on several nationally televised interviews, these reporters are likely to be witnesses in any potential litigation regarding this incident.” Ryan’s letter also indicated that the investigation could somehow be skewed given that Mosby’s husband, Nick, is a Baltimore City councilman.

“Most importantly, it is clear that your husband’s political future will be directly impacted, for better or worse, by the outcome of your investigation,” Ryan wrote. “In order to avoid any appearance of impropriety or a violation of the Professional Rules of Professional Responsibility, I ask that you appoint a special prosecutor to determine whether or not any charges should be filed.”

Mosby’s biography says she is the youngest chief prosecutor of “any major city in America,” and said she is a Boston native who joined the State’s Attorney Office after graduating from Boston College Law School.

While Mosby said she is charging the six officers with “homicide,” Ryan rejected that conclusion.

“As tragic as this situation is, none of the officers involved are responsible for the death of Mr. Gray,” he wrote. “To the contrary, at all times, each of the officers diligently balanced their obligations to protect Mr. Gray and discharge their duties to protect the public.”

Someone died on their watch and by their action or in-action. They can turn on each other but some or all deserve jail. All if it turns out they lied in the aftermath. Bad cops are bad cops and deserve railroading if that is what it takes to get them off the street, out of uniform, and in jail.

I am an old guy, and so,, I can make comments like this one.....keep hitting on police like CNN does and others, and the folks in blue may just look the other way when trouble appears....think you micromanage a policeman on the job, with radios and cameras....the working police have a saying it is FIDO....I will clean up the language and call it “Forget It Drive On”

Sorry that Grey got into trouble, but he was a piece of human flotsam...

Perhaps you should do a ride-a-long with a local cop a few times to see what the job entails. Of all the thousands of cops working 24/7 365 days a year, only a tiny number are bad.

Are they human and do they make mistakes? Yes, but for the most part they do a great job in extremely stressful situations that sometimes involve split second decisions that could cost them their lives or that of someone else.

From what I have seen and heard (and we really don’t have the evidence yet, do we), the most these cops are guilty of is a mistake in judgment. All you have to do is watch the show Cops, and you will see that almost every time a perp is taken down or in handcuffs, he claims to be in pain. I saw one that claimed to be having a heart attack in order to get the cop to have him taken to the hospital instead of to jail. Perps lie all the time, and it’s not an easy thing to tell when one is really hurt.

You can’t even get justice done if every time you need righteous indignation all you can muster is rage.

Or it could really be true that their rage got taken out on Freddy, a rage that might not have even been ignited by Freddy.

It might be true that Baltimore is the City Of The Adults Throwing A Toddler Tantrum.

I didn’t see any anger in any of the videos of the cops. Perhaps they didn’t believe Gray was really hurt, but I didn’t see any brutality or anger. This is a witch hunt.

Thanks and no thanks. I grew up with a dad that was a cop. Been there, done that. While there are good cops, I have zero tolerance for bad cops, whether they violate our constitutional rights or kill people. I find it equally pathetic to see people jump to defend cops that may and sometimes turn out to be guilty, but do so because they are cops.

The cops I know never defend bad cops. Bad cops make them angry because it makes all cops look bad.

That was after Gray got out, right? Maybe they felt satisfied.

Someone died on their watch and by their action or in-action. Prove it, beyond a reasonable doubt.

It's perfectly plausible drug-dealing scumbag Freddie caused his own injuries after ingesting heroin and fling himself off the walls of the van.

They took 45 min to go 4 blocks. They admit they did not strap him in. They admit he arrived injured. They admit he did not get treatment. He admit he died.. The police already admit their actions and inactions. Now only question was whether any of these were intentional and whether all six are guilty or just one or a couple.

Time will tell how this all pans out, meanwhile I can’t make up my mind whether Mosby is brave, or just misunderstands the politics. She’s out of Boston, you have to figure the politics are similar, and that was a nimble move on her part conductiong her inquiry through the Sheriffs.

They took 45 min to go 4 blocks.

Could the be because they had to stop four times to try and stop Freddie from throwing himself off the walls o the van?

They admit he did not get treatment.

As a police officer said on the Kelly File, Freddie a history of "putting on a show" when he was arrested. In the past, he had tried to use every excuse he could come up with to try and prevent being taken to police headquarters.
