A Colorado heating and cooling company was caught refusing to do business in a Denver neighborhood because residents there are "colored people" and "they don't pay their bills," according to an undercover investigation by Fox affiliate KDVR.

I remember some Black comedian pondering why Black folks were called “Colored.” He said when White people get cold, they turn blue. When Blacks get cold, they’re still Black. When a White person gets nauseous, they turn green. When Blacks get nauseous, they’re still Black. When a White person gets sunburned, they turn red. When a Black person gets sunburned, they’re still Black. So how come White folks ain’t called “Colored” when they turn all different sorts of colors ?

"Colored People" = "People of Color" (the description often favored by liberals and, well, people of color)

Is there any linguistic difference, not counting hyper-sensitivity?

BTW, I'm not quite 90 (by a long shot) and in the South when I was growing up, "colored people" was a neutral description. "Negro" was 'high-falutin', and the other "N-word" was acknowledged to be disrespectful. "Nigra" was acceptable.

They aren’t refusing to do business with black people because of their race. They are refusing to do business with black people because they don’t pay their bills. That isn’t racism - that is common sense.

That's nonsense. The assumption that all black people don't pay their bills, and the resulting refusal to do business with any black people, is most certainly racism. If they are afraid of people not paying their bills, then do what every other business does - run a credit check, check references, etc.

When I was growing up in the mid-70s there was a gentle elderly couple that lived next door to us. Good people, in their late 70s. When my cat had her one and only litter of kittens, the woman, who was widowed by that time (if I am recalling correctly), adopted the one kitten that was mostly black with a little bit of white on his paws. We called him Roscoe, after Roscoe P. Coltrane (so that dates when my cat had her kittens). She renamed him Nigger.

There was not any shame, awkwardness, or outrage... she just named the cat that, not because she was racist or hated "Colored Folks", it was just a completely appropriate name in her mind.

If a sufficiently high percentage of an identifiable group creates problems, it is sometimes more cost effective to not deal with that group, than to do the extra work to distinguish the good customers from the bad ones.

In a free market, the problem is self-correcting. If the discriminating company is correct, then they will prosper. If they incorrectly pass up too many good customers, then they will not prosper.

Regardless, it should be their right to decide who to do business with. Just like consumers have the right to arbitrarily decide who to buy from.
