Freddie Gray, who died a week after suffering injuries while in Baltimore police custody, had a lengthy criminal record, mainly for drug-related offenses, according to state court records. Police claim he was “involved in criminal activity,” prior to his arrest.
Gray, 25, died after spending seven days in a coma as a result of injuries he suffered while in the custody of city police, the Baltimore Sun reports.
He was arrested April 12 by four officers outside a public housing complex. Police said four bicycle officers tried to stop Gray for an unspecified reason and he ran from them. They caught him and detained him while waiting for backup.
It’s not yet known how Gray died. His death has sparked unrest in the city, including protests that turned violent.
A friend told the Baltimore Sun that Gray may have ran from the officers because, “he had a history with that police beating him.”

Gray had a lengthy arrest record with convictions dating back until at least 2007, according to the Maryland Department of Justice. Not all of the arrests led to convictions, in many of the cases he pleaded guilty to one charge while the others were dropped. Details of when he spent time in prison were not immediately available. His arrest record includes at least 18 arrests:

•July 16, 2008: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute
•March 28, 2008: Unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance

Why Was Freddie Gray Arrested Before His Death?
Details of what led police to try to arrest Gray in April 2015 have not been made public by police. Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez told the Baltimore Sun that details of the arrest remain “a bit vague,” and that the officers patrolling a high-crime area with drug issues believed Gray was “immediately involved or had been recently involved in criminal activity.”
Documents obtained by the Guardian show that he was charged with unlawful possession of a switch blade knife, which was found after he was detained. The documents are not clear about what led to the stop. No other charges are listed.
The Associated Press reports Gray has been in and out of prison on drug convictions since 2008, according to online court records. He was set to start a trial in May on drug charges stemming from a December arrest.
“We had officers in a high-crime area known to have high narcotic incidents,” Rodriguez said, according to the AP. “The officers believe that Mr. Gray was immediately involved or recently involved in criminal activity and decided to make contact.”
Police released a timetable of the events leading up to Gray’s arrest and death. He was seen at about 8:40 a.m. on April 12 on a street northwest of the city’s downtown. The officers approached Gray and he ran. He was caught about two minutes later two blocks away. The officers called for a transport van at about 8:42 p.m. Then, at 8:54 a.m., a block away from where Gray was arrested, the van left for the Western District station “after stopping to place additional restraints on the suspect.” At about 9:24 a.m., an ambulance is called to the Western District station.

I worked in the criminal justice field for 25 years. People's lifestyle choices definitely play a role in what happens to them. If you choose to be a criminal, and victimize others, don't be surprised when you're caught by the cops, or victimized yourself by another criminal. The greater number of illegal activities you participate in, increases your chances of something going wrong. People who associate with bad folk don't usually have good lives either. If you don't want to end up being a victim, don't participate in activities, or associate with people that could put you in the position of becoming one. The old saying, "If you lay down with dogs, you wake up with fleas" comes to mind.
Yes, people who smoke jeopardize their health. I know, because three of my family members died from lung cancer. Two other siblings died of heart attack and stroke. I'm the baby of the family, and the only one left, and I'm the only one that never smoked. That doesn't mean I won't get cancer of some sort down the road. I'm going to die of something one of these days, but I doubt it will be caused by the company I keep, or from any illegal activities.
The need for additional restraints contradicts the claim you make that there was no resistance, but believe what you will.
Yes, yes, its all about the guy, who they still haven’t even offered a reason for the arrest, cops have been suspended and aren’t talking, and the police chief himself admits the officers violated policy with the suspect! But yes, the dead man is the one in the wrong, because you know, he was a thug, and deserved it.... What idiotic nonsense. Absolutely unbelievable how completely ignorant some folks on here are. The attempts at moral justification for this by some folks is insane. Everyone with a few neurons firing should be adamant that the truth be found out, instead some are twisting themselves into knots trying to make the “he deserved it” argument.
Just a little reading.... maybe you’ll learn something, but I highly doubt it. The police Chief is openly admitting they did not do what they should have done, multiple times, and yet you and others want to try to argue he got what he deserved... idiotic.
At a news conference Friday at police headquarters, Commissioner Anthony W. Batts said protesters have a right to speak out, but he urged them to remain nonviolent. He also provided an update on the investigation, saying that officers violated department policies while Gray was in their custody.
Police said Gray, who was dragged by officers to a transport wagon, should have gotten immediate medical attention. Batts said the department is investigating whether Gray’s injuries resulted from his arrest or a “rough ride” — in which police vans are driven erratically to harm unbuckled, handcuffed detainees. Batts said Gray could have sustained injuries during arrest and transport.
“We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. No excuses from me. Period,” Batts said. “We know our police employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times.”
That is what I remember from the video also. I wonder if there was an arrest video.
I believe that there was another arrestee (?) that was also picked up. Same van.
you requested further video, here you go... this shows at the 2:23 mark that after he was dragged and supposedly unable to use his legs, he wound up standing on the back of the van and cursing at the cops, just before he bent his head and walked forward into the van.

By the way, this video shows him clearly standing on his own two legs cursing at the police at the 2:23 mark... then he bent over and walked forward into the back of the van. And this was after all the video showing him limp-legged and supposedly paralyzed according to the left-wingers.

Yes, and if you look at the court record at the link...it looks more like Freddie Gray is the defendant and the Peachtree financial company was probably a debt collector for Allstate. They were likely trying to get a structured resettlement from Freddie on behalf of Allstate.

Aren’t you thankful that they were not around in 1775-81. If they were, we would still be under British rule. But on second thought, they might have helped. It would have been difficult for the British to fight when they were swarmed by bootlickers wanting to lick their boots.
