Rand Paul: Let’s face it, it was a mistake to topple Saddam Hussein

Interesting, not because it’s a surprise that Ron Paul’s son feels this way — remember this? — but because this is a subject that every Republican in the field, Rand included, would probably prefer to avoid during the primaries.

Or am I wrong about that? Could this be a smart play for Paul, especially given how it’ll make Jeb Bush squirm?

Do your own research. I have. You are just closing your mind. Wake up and get off your ass. I am right. You will just argue what I show you. I have been here long enough to know that. It time for you to stop living in ignorance. Only you can correct that.

I specifically recall Bush senior deliberately leaving Saddam in power because foreign policy experts feared deposit him would leave a “Power Vaccum”.
Nature abhors a vaccum, and Isis has gladly filled it.

Spot on! thanks.

You should have started with the Magna Carta.

Did we really have to learn how to make fire?

I don’t like Paul but sometimes he makes some good points.

LOL

Years ago my brother and sister-in-law were flying somewhere and I went with them to buy some of the new luggage that had wheels. My brother said he was buying wheeled luggage so Phyllis wouldn’t get too tired handling the luggage in the airport. She got a kick out of it.

“Fix me a steak, woman”.

He is not my favored candidate but I do agree with him on this. Toppling Saddam benefited Iran and made possible the growth of ISIS (i.e., the success of ISIS results partially from Sunni and former Saddam army types responding to the Shiite / Iranian takeover of Iraq). None of this excuses Obama for just walking away from it. But for the same trillion dollars we spent in Iraq, we could have one heck of a perimeter fence system with Mexico and thousands of extra agents to enforce our immigration laws (which should be tightened up, not loosened, but that’s another story!) (of course, GWB had no interest in that). We cannot succeed at a reasonable cost in imposing Western-style democracies in the 3rd World / Muslim world, and we should stop trying. I also think the GOP needs to get away from defending GWB - he was not a conservative, he grew the government... and defending him just obscures what should be a clear conservative message.

Learn how to read. I never wrote that the mujaheddin were the same as the Taliban. The mujaheddin was a loose group of anti-soviet fighters we armed.

Know your history.

OK. We did not create Bin-Laden directly but we created a vacuum of which he filled. He was not a big player and he did come late in the game. But what he did was keep a book of like minded individuals and groups that he later used to create Al-Qaeda, or loosely translalated as "the base", along with Ayman al-Zawahiri and others.

I believe, but we will never know, that had we not armed the Mujaheddin we would not be having the problems we are having now. Once the Soviets were defeated there were a lot of restless Islamist and Al-Qaeda took advantage of this to move on to bigger and better things. As I wrote before, I believe the collapse of the Soviet Union was inevitable as long as we had a strong leadership in this Country.

It's hard to argue when you are dealing with "what ifs."

You can play that ‎Kevin Bacon game forever, about everything and any era. It isn't substantive and our helping to defeat the Russians, may have saved the world. Thank God for Reagan.

I don't know what the Kevin Bacon game is but it was the Soviets we defeated, not the Russians.

Your are right, Thank God For Reagan. I somehow don't think we would be having the trouble we are having now if Reagan like leader were in the White House. What ifs.

The “Soviets” were merely the Russian empire that Russia was holding as slaves.

East Germany no longer exists, while Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and every one of Russia’s other erstwhile Warsaw Pact partners are now members of NATO. So are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which in 1989 were parts of the Soviet Union itself.

Those members of the Soviet forces forces facing NATO. switched to NATO as soon as their chains came off, now they are part of our voluntary defensive military alliance against Russia.

What you just wrote is why I think the Soviet Union would have collapsed anyway. Too many countries and Republics were not happy being a part of it. Also, too many Russians were tired of it too.
