It is well-known the relationship between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not a good one. Nevertheless, both Obama and Netanyahu still have to work on a diplomatic level. Apparently, Obama’s support for allowing Iran to have nuclear capabilities is highly favored by the country’s people, who are recently shown celebrating in the streets. It is also the same deal Netanyahu warned about. A deal which, if approved, would result in dire consequences, not just for Israel, but for the world, according to some observers.
For Vice President Joe Biden, he might just be oblivious to the strained Obama and Netanyahu relationship by stating “no president has ever done more to support Israel’s security than Obama.”
According to CNS News, Joe Biden got to speak at the 67th Annual Israeli Independence Day Celebration in Washington D.C., Thursday evening. During his speech, Biden said the following, which is causing quite a stir among conservatives, pro-Netanyahu supporters, and backers of Israel.
“President Obama and I are proud to carry forward the unbroken line of American leaders — Democrat and Republican — who have honored America’s sacred promise to protect the homeland of the Jewish people.”
“No President has ever done more to support Israel’s security than President Barack Obama.”
With the aforementioned statement, Joe Biden has downplayed the growing rift between Obama and Netanyahu. Biden also segued to reaffirm the Obama Administration’s push for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, a solution that Netanyahu has constantly disapproved of.
Though the growing rift between both leaders was downplayed, Joe Biden at least wasn’t oblivious to it and actually acknowledged its existence. According to Fox News, Biden likened such to that of a family squabble.
“We’re like family. We have a lot to say to one another. Sometimes we drive each other crazy, but we love each other — and we protect each other.”
It seems Joe Biden is doing damage control in comparing Obama and Netanyahu’s issues to that seen in families. Yet, Ron Dermer, Israel’s ambassador to Washington D.C. and one of Netanyahu’s top advisers, acknowledged both the U.S. and Israel had major disagreements on critical matters in the past, but security matters inevitably pull the two countries together.
“We have weathered all those disagreements to grow closer and closer, decade after decade.”
Finally, Joe Biden affirmed to Netanyahu and the State of Israel that the nuclear deal being worked on with Iran will not put Israel at risk. Biden also made it known that the U.S. and Iran aren’t the only countries partaking in the deal as other world powers are a part of it too.
“This isn’t a grand bargain between the United States and Iran. It’s based on hard-hitting, hard-headed compromises and assessments.”
