McCain mocks Cruz over guns on bases claim

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) is mocking Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for claiming he is “pressing” for hearings on allowing U.S. troops to carry private firearms on military installations.

“You know, I was fascinated to hear that because I haven’t heard a thing about it from him. Nor has my staff heard from his staff. Where did that come from? I have not a clue,” McCain told reporters on Monday. “I’d be glad to discuss the issue and see if we need a hearing, but it came as a complete surprise to me that he had been pressing me."

“Maybe it was through some medium that I’m not familiar with. Maybe bouncing it off the ozone layer, for all I know,” McCain joked. “There’s a lot of holes in the ozone layer, so maybe it wasn’t the ozone layer that he bounced it off of. Maybe it was through hand telegraph, maybe sign language, who knows?”

Cruz, a member of the Armed Services panel and a 2016 presidential candidate, made the comment on Sunday while speaking at a campaign event in New Hampshire, according to Politico.

“I am very concerned about that policy,” Cruz said. “I think it’s very important to have a public discussion about why we’re denying our soldiers the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights.”

In recent years, GOP lawmakers, including fellow Texan Rep. Louie Gohmert, have pushed for the Defense Department to ease its ban on private firearms, citing mass shootings, such as the two that have occurred at Fort Hood. They contend such tragedies could have been avoided had soldiers been allowed to be armed.

Last week Gohmert urged the House Armed Services Committee to include a provision in its version of the annual defense policy bill to lift the ban.

A laughing McCain, who earlier on Monday chided Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), another Republican presidential contender, over his understanding of foreign policy, said reporters should follow up with Cruz on how he sought hearings on the controversial issue.

“Ask him how he communicated with me because I’d be very interested. Who knows what I’m missing?” he said.

I’d like to think you are right, but I’ll bet there are a lot of Republican women out there that are thinking sex trumps.

If she only got 10%, it could deny a better person the nomination.

That is the GOPe and RNC game this year, just making sure a Conservative can’t get the nomination.

That’s why McCain supports her.

Ted, you must be over ground zero; you’re catching flak from the enemy commander.

Got a fundraiser letter with an return envelope today for Sen McCain. I wrote that he told us we could trust Obama and look where we are. I told him he has no judgement and shouldn’t run.

Good old John McCain.

One of the most reliable liberals out there.

When I was in Switzerland, it was common to see a camo’d service guy on the train with his rifle leaning against the wall.

Switzerland have any problems?

Civilians with ccw permits should be allowed to conceal carry on base too. I have friends who, because they can’t legally keep a gun secured in their car, are unsrmrd when driving to and from work too.

I know McCain suffered terribly in the Hanoi Hilton. I know they broke his arms and shoulders. Why on Earth couldn't they have removed his tongue?

[Ted, you must be over ground zero]

Ground Zero is where George Washington was sworn in as POTUS.

As POTUS, TED CRUZ will swear to uphold the U.S. Constitution.

John McCain is a vicious, mean-spirited, establishment RINO.
I hope he is flushed out of office in the next election cycle.

Senator McCain may be a reliable liberal but he sounds less and less like a rational person....Oh
So what does Senator McCain have to say about the issue?
Giving our loyal members of the military an opportunity to defend themselves against attack from clear and present dangers seems like a good policy to me.
I bet the military whose names and addresses were published by the Jihadis may have an opinion to share with the clueless Senator McCain.

Side note, I don’t think testing Sen. Cruz on his resolve about issues that concern him is a winning move for anyone. He strikes me as a man who will call a bluff without blinking.

And McCain strikes me as a man who could well have forgotten half the conversations he's had in the past 24 hours.

Every male adult between 20 and 30 in Switzerland are issued a select fire automatic weapon and are trained in Civilian Defense. Military service is compulsory and when they are discharged they may keep their weapons. However, they must be modified to be only semi-automatic.

There are two reasons why Switzerland has been able to remain neutral for over a century. The forbidding terrain and the heavily armed citizenry.

You should have attached it to a 100# boulder and sent it back so that you could waist his mailing funds.

It is ridiculous that our troops aren’t trusted to carry their own firearms on base.

McCain had his shot and gave it away. Time to shut-up and go quietly into the night.

That’s how it looks to me too. The article has “pressing” in quotes but it seems like Cruz might not have actually said that.

Cruz has an opportunity here to zing McCain for being confused and overreacting if that’s the case.
