Gwyneth Paltrow fails at being poor

It's a good thing Gwyneth Paltrow has buckets of money at her disposal, because her attempt to live like a needy person for a week has ended in complete failure.

Paltrow agreed to take the food stamp challenge, where she was expected to feed her family on just $29 a week - what American low-income families receive on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

It turns out, shopping with that kind of budget was too difficult for Paltrow to pull off.

"As I suspected, we only made it through about four days, when I personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black licorice)," she wrote on her lifestyle website Goop.

Earlier in the week, Paltrow posted a photo of the groceries she purchased for $29, including over a half dozen limes, fresh cilantro and avocados - food that would be out of the price range for most families on food stamps.

Critics were quick to make fun of her shopping selection online.

"But how do you live without organic cilantro?" was one response.

This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store—what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week.

"I'm a liberal who's totally offended by your silly SNAP challenge," wrote another. It's not a game. It's a reality for many of us."

And a savvier shopper offered the Oscar-winning actress some tips.

"No, Gwyneth. Those with $29 to spend buy a loaf of bread, milk, potatoes, beans, rice, pasta and sauce. On sale."

Although the actress fell three days short of her goal, she says she has learned from her experience and gave herself a C- for her attempt.

"My perspective has been forever altered by how difficult it was to eat wholesome, nutritious food on that budget, even for just a few days—a challenge that 47 million Americans face every day, week, and year."

She also wrote that she donated to the Food Bank.

1. It is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. You are NOT SUPPOSED TO LIVE off of it.

2. To live in $29 for a week? Rice, beans, bread, PB&J and Ramen Soup. I did it in college for 4 years...

I would fail at that too and I am poor.

I'm going to live like a spoiled rich person for a week.

Check out what I just bought for the kitchen counter!

How many people see the word “supplemental?” The money is supposed to be in addition to their own cash and not enough to entirely feed them.

If anyone, anywhere, uses Gwyneth Paltrow for life advice, well then, just maybe they would be qualified for little else than fodder for Soylent Green. Just my opinion, of course.

Thank you. "Supplemental". Apparently this actress (I can't speak to that; I've never seen one of her TV shows or movies) doesn't own a dictionary.

The closest that i ever got to supporting Gwyneth was watching her mother act in the movie Futureworld 40 years ago....

Interesting that these families getting SNAP $$$ also get their children fed three meals M through F at school and can also go to the local food pantries, who are all clambering for more $$$$$.

Note to food pantries: when you give away something for FREE you get more people standing in line for your FREE STUFF!

She went to grab a bottle of Perrier from the fridge and was reminded she has to drink from the tap... With no Brita filter.

End of experiment.

She gave the rest of the crap she bought to the food bank and savored her Kobe beef.

Pray America is waking

That was my exact diet in college as well! Bread from the day-old bread store, though.

Is there any other kind?

Fresh home made. Potential economies there, I suppose, but really, it tastes much better.

When I was in college I pretty much had no food cost except for weekends.

For supper I ate at the training table. It was all you could eat and good food. I would take 3 or 4 ice cream sandwiches home.

For breakfast I would have the ice cream sandwiches. I would skip Dinner and then eat like a pig for Supper.

For weekends I would have four meals of Campbell’s vegetable beef soup along with an American cheese sandwich. I was on scholarship plus I had a job. My books came from the athletic dept. library.

I actually made money. Enough to buy my first used car.

its not like Snap recipients don't get many other freebies....SSI/SSD...free housing...free transportation..free phones...free food at the food banks...did I skip anything....???

people other than the idle rich must EAT TO LIVE....they need calories...they need protein....the last thing in the world they need is to starve on trying to make cilantro and avocados their main meal...
