Harry Reid Will Force Vote on Loretta Lynch if GOP Delays Any Longer
Mediaite ^ | 4-16-15 | Andrew Desiderio

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) says he will force a vote on Loretta Lynch‘s attorney general nomination if it is delayed any longer by Senate Republicans, Mediaite has learned. Reid, the outgoing Senate minority leader, will call for the vote in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow set to air on Thursday night.

“We’ve put up with this far too long and we’re going to need to have a vote on her very soon that’s created by Mitch McConnell or I’ll create one,” Reid will say. “I can still do that. I know parliamentary procedure around here and we’re going to put up with this for a little while longer but not much.”

When Maddow questioned whether Reid has the power to override Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Reid will say he “absolutely” has the power to force votes.

“If we don’t get something done soon I will force a vote,” the minority leader will say. “I had a conversation today with a number of republicans and told them really to get her done or I will make sure they will have an opportunity to vote against her.”

Obama nominated Lynch back in November, and her delayed confirmation has been the subject of intense political back-and-forth. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) called on Senate Republicans to stop the delay, and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) found himself in hot water over his suggestion that Republican were putting Lynch, an African-American, in the “back of the bus.”

Just yesterday, Al Sharpton‘s National Action Network called for a hunger strike over the stalled confirmation.

The full interview will air tonight on The Rachel Maddow Show at 9 p.m. ET on MSNBC.

McConnell will cave. You can already see the machination evolving. The Republicans care more about what the beltway media, and government insiders say about them than the people the claim to represent. McConnell will now begin focus on failure plots, and excuses to keep low information Republicans on board. If Reid really can force a vote, I find it funny McConnell never seemed to be able to force votes.

>> Every senator has the right and power to call for debate

Calling for debate is not the same as forcing a vote.

Agreed, but the two notions are quite similar under senate procedure. Both "bring up for debate" and filing a cloture motion are, by agreeement, not by rules, deferred to the majority leader. The reason Lynch isn't being debated (so no reason to call for a vote) is that McConnell hasn't scheduled the subject. This "scheduling" activity is essentially what is deferred to the majority leader. Once a subject is up for debate, it inevitably moves to some sort of vote - either up or down, or a motion to table.

I think the GOP should take her up, and reject the nomination. Do it tomorrow.

Now that Reid has admitted to using the well of the senate to lie about Romney not having paid taxes, where in the hell are the republicans to bring charges against Reid to censure this kind of thing. Then he is asked if it bothered him, he admitted that he lied, but.......Romney lost the election. Where are they?

The Republicans care more about what the beltway media, and government insiders say about them than the people the claim to represent . . . which is why the states should be returned to the senate.
