Nootropic Brain Drugs Rise in Popularity for Today’s Cutthroat Corporate Climbers
The Observer ^ | 04/15/2015 | Jack Smith IV

Posted on 04/15/2015 12:21:25 PM PDT by Kid Shelleen

Andrew started his college graduation day at 6 a.m. with a wakefulness agent called modafinil, sometimes known as Provigil—it was the first time he remembers nootropic brain drugs having such a startling effect. He was juggling family and celebrations along with two ceremonies, engineering in the morning and economics in the afternoon, with a band competition in between, which he won. For 22 waking hours he was happy, alert, firing on all cylinders, oblivious to any fatigue.

“At that point, it was like, ‘Holy crap, this stuff can be very powerful,’ ” Andrew told the Observer.

Now that he’s a corporate strategist working with health care companies on their mergers, Andrew, who requested we use a pseudonym, will sometimes call upon some chemical assistance for business trips requiring long flights, client meetings, back-to-back dinners and work hours back at the hotel. He doesn’t want a pedal-to-the-metal amphetamine: He wants focus, creativity and clarity without the side effects or dependencies.

Based on the vocabulary, I'm wondering if Marie Harf is a heavy user.

(probably not)

I’ve heard that Adderall is referred to as the “breakfast of champions” by students at top grad schools.

Although I have no personal connection to verify it.

My understanding is that's it's a class IV drug. Yes, you will need a prescription.

Provigil....In my line of work...it’s given a lot to OSA patients..that can’t stay alert during the day. Sometimes prescribed to Night Shift workers too.......

Marie was a poli-sci major at IU Bloomington.
Those folks are typically more into grass and booze.

It’s the high achievers who look to stims to excel.

How long will it last without serious consequences.

Get enough sleep and you probably don't need the stuff.

My youngest took Adderall...during college. She's a little ADHD..and was a bit overwhelmed at times. We talked about it quite a bit...

She ended up graduating with honors and rec'd 100% on her Boards for her License....( Which apparently is unheard of...)

I wasn't happy about her taking it...but she's always been a perfectionist about many things. I understood it. And it helped her. She no longer takes it....

The amount of studying, homework, internships, etc that students in certain disciplines (eg engineering) have to put in to get good grades is almost insane. It's exacerbated by the requirements colleges put on them to take crap like “core diversity” and “social understanding” courses that have no basis in their major. Imagine how frustrating it is to be studying engineering and having to waste precious time on essays and social studies about gay tiger shrimp and Shakespearean albino empowerment.

I’ve been doing night shift, 6.00pm to 6.00 am and it sucked because I had obligations in the day and when I cold rest I could never sleep. I was surviving on 3 to 4 hours of sleep.

Very old news. This was a phase in the mid 90s. Modafinil is the one about which I’ve anything negative to say. There’s a crash associated with it.

I’m going with brain tumor but the result is the same. And I’m not even going to look up the known side effects since I can pretty much guess what they are. Doktors who prescribe this stuff without a clear diagnosis of a problem belong in jail and part of their sentence should be to read the side effects of every new drug that’s been introduced in the past two decades. I’ve had friends die from brain aneurisms while using prescribed blood thinners, for instance——there is much half-assedness out there in the world of quacks.

My oldest who is 17 years old is at high school and then going to college full time and doing a part time job at Winn Dixie.
He hopes to leave high school with a AA.

some of the classes he has to take to get this degree is ridiculous.
