Abolish the Internal Revenue Service? IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has said the government must have an IRS to collect the taxes to fund the government. Mr. Koskinen is right that no matter what kind of tax system we have, there needs to be a tax collection bureau. But those in favor of abolishing the present IRS are correct in that the United States certainly can get along perfectly well without the politicized, abusive and rights-trampling tax agency the IRS has become.
Mr. Koskinen and others who defend the IRS claim the problem is with the tax law, which is written by Congress. A tax system ought to be designed to obtain the necessary revenue with the least amount of damage to the economy and the civil liberties of the citizens. The present tax system gets a failing grade on both accounts. Promising special provisions to those who will provide campaign funds is a temptation that some politicians seem not to be able to resist. A simple flat tax or consumption tax would take care of many problems.
That said, there is still no excuse for much of what the IRS does. IRS agents complain that nobody likes them and they are shunned when they go to parties. Count me as one who is not sympathetic. No one is forced to work for the IRS. They are all there by free choice. I expect most of them are there because it was the best job they could find that offered the combination of pay, benefits and the luxury of almost no risk of being fired no matter how incompetent their performance. That includes criminal offenses, such as releasing private taxpayer information and targeting taxpayers on the basis of ideology.

Very fine with me
Yes! If the States just sent the federal gov’t the revenue they needed for the military and the few other things the constitution gives them authority over, just think of the freedom!
A flat tax, fair tax, or VAT would require only the tiniest IRS.
And on top of that, they would no longer have access to citizens records.
Flat tax..same for every dollar of income, be it from earnings, capital gains, dividends...persons or corporations (since they are the same thing, eh?....no loopholes. Done.
But then how will Massa Fed harvest on his tax farm?
If you send a donation to a charity fighting hunger in Africa or saving abused animals they send you a picture of a starving African picaninny or a skinny, soulful puppy dog to give you an idea of what they do with your money.
I’m writing a large (for us) check to the IRS today.
You would think the least they could do is send us back a photo of Obama’s illegal Dreamer kids in their new clothes, with their new dental braces, sitting in their hotel rooms, playing their new video games.
Or a nice photo of a moocher gang with their new Air Jordans.
“Abolish the Internal Revenue Service? IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has said the government must have an IRS to collect the taxes to fund the government.”
Actually, this is incorrect. Congress could just send a bill to the states, and let the states worry about coming up with the funding. Then the federal government has no need for a revenue agency.
I agree; but, it is part of the -money-from-thin-air- _reserve_ system; joined at the hip. That is why the _income_tax_ was passed shortly after _reserve_ was created.
This is how I would go about doing it. We know how much we need to fund the government. We can do that without an IRS.
Figure we need 3.5 Trillion. We need how much every companies pre-tax is, how much every individuals pre-tax is. With this knowledge a simple formula can be written to estimate what each person, company needs to pay in order to keep government going for 24 months.
Now, take tax accountants, and put them on a 24 month contract. Their job is to go through the budget and identify duplication and waste. Put forensic accountants on a 24 month contract to identify outright fraud. As far as the lawyers, they can find new work.
We can clean the entire process up in 2 years.
Abolish the IRS?
How about the Bureau of Indian affairs?
Edumacation dept?
Interstate commerce dept?
TSA?
EPA?
and at the very least 200 other absolutely worthless gub mint agencies that are simply leaches on society.
Get rid of em all and make their worthless “employees” find real jobs.
Why 10%? Simple. God only asks for 10%, the government doesn't deserve more than the Lord.
RE: Why 10%? Simple. God only asks for 10%, the government doesn’t deserve more than the Lord.
I believe I heard a Presidential candidate say that in 2012 :)
The important discussion begins with the IRS we *need* to fund the government, and the elimination of those parts of the agency that we *do not need*.
To start with, the vast majority of the agency deals with the minutiae of the tax code. Simplify the tax code and those parts of the IRS become superfluous. However, this also puts several corporations and over a million tax preparers out of work.
Ping.
What’s income?
Earnings, capital gains, and dividends.
So, I own a business. A client pays me. Is that revenue income? All of it?
