The geopolitics of presidential visits sometimes is news, like when Presidents are unpopular in a state where the governor comes from the President's party. Yet recent Presidents have traveled so much - Barack Obama included - that some trips aren't that newsworthy, except in the places the Commander in Chief visits.
But when Obama landed in Utah last week it was the 49th state he'd visited since his inauguration in 2009. The math made it more newsworthy than normal because it's down to one Obama-less state - South Dakota.
Your correspondent's home state.
The land of the Black Hills, Badlands, Wall Drug, George McGovern, Hubert Humphrey, Tom Brokaw and the young actress who plays Betty Francis in "Mad Men." And rolling prairies that snarky scribes have called miles and miles of miles and miles.
Who can blame Obama?
South Dakota hasn't voted for a Democrat for President since Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1964. Although it frequently elects Democrats for Congress, it is so relentlessly Republican for President that it even went against favorite son McGovern in 1972, choosing Richard Nixon, something that McGovern always considered among his top disappointments.
Not to say that the Nixon landslide would have been any less massive, but losing your home state?
That was something McGovern and Al Gore could always share. Had Gore won his home state Tennessee in 2000, Florida's hanging chads wouldn't even be historic footnotes.

Happy to say I won't be traveling to Yellowstone by South Dakota this year. Can't think of anything worse spoiling a vacation.

Why not just change what the Stature of Liberty is holding in her hand, maybe a picture of zero? Or cement another stone from Kenya on top of Plymouth Rock? Or change the stars on the US flag to o’s?
