IRS’s Koskinen: Goal Is For Taxpayers To Have Online Account at the IRS

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen said that a future goal of the agency is for taxpayers to have an account at the IRS and for taxpayers “to have a more complete online experience for all their transactions with the IRS.”

“The IRS needs to do more and take a different approach and one that doesn’t just rely on resources,” said the commissioner, speaking at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

“We need to be looking forward to a new, improved way of doing business,” he said. “This involves looking into the future in a more comprehensive way in considering how we can take advantage of the latest technology to move the taxpayer experience to a new level and do it in a way that’s cost effective in the government.”

“In particular, we’re focused on how best to use our limited information technology resources,” he said. “Our goal is for taxpayers to have a more complete online experience for all their transactions with the IRS. The online experience should give everyone confidence in knowing that they can take care of their tax obligations in a fast, secure and consistent manner.”

“The goal is not unrealistic -- we’re not trying to go to the moon or Mars -- we’re simply saying that people should expect the same level of service when dealing with the IRS in the future as they have now from their financial institutions where there’s a bank, whether its a mortgage or a brokerage company,” Koskinen added.

“The idea is that the taxpayers would have an account at the IRS where they or their preparers can log in securely, get all of their information about their accounts and interact with the IRS as needed,” he said.

“Most things that taxpayers need to do to fulfill their obligations could be done virtually, there would be much less need for in person help either by waiting in line at an IRS assistance center or calling in by phone,” said Koskinen. “Improving service for taxpayers in this way can also help on the compliance front. We need to be faster and smarter.”

“With a more modern system this could identify problems when a return is filed rather than coming back to taxpayers years after the fact while the meter is running on potential fees and interest,” said Koskinen. “We want to interact with taxpayers as soon as possible so that those issues can be corrected without costly follow up or labor-intensive audits.” In his remarks, Koskinen also noted how the IRS budget is now at its lowest level of funding since 2008.

“The challenges facing the IRS today leave policy makers with a very clear choice,” he said. “A decision to adequately fund the IRS will give us the tools we need to fulfill our mission and build for the future. A decision to keep underfunding the agency will punish taxpayers, reduce the revenue needed to fund the government and inject risk into our system of voluntary tax

...(IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen...

First of all, this guy is a slimy little weasel.

His demeanor, his way of looking at someone as though they were crap on the bottom of his shoe, all of that...prompts me to say first and foremost: *&^% you, you little piece of rancid $&^*.

Beyond that, his motivation is much the same as most other IRS poofters, which is to screw over the taxpayer.

I do not want to do business online with Infernal Revenue Disservice.

I came very close to a refund this year and will probably get one next year...and I have every intention of furnishing a "burner" account for them to put my refund into.

One of the reasons (of many) that I support Ted Cruz is he has the temerity to suggest a better way of accounting for revenue. Sooner or later, he'll be excoriated for it, but that's another story.

I'm not sure a flat tax will work, but it's got to be better than what we have now.

And if it helps to get rid of the likes of Koskinen and Lois Lerner (who STILL has not suffered ANY adverse action for her crap), then I'm all for it.

Or, we can go to a flat tax, fire the entire IRS, and leave tax enforcement to the local and state LEO’s.

Suuuuuuuure. What he means is that they only have our address, credit card, earnings, investment, charity, interest, and other financial information and they're only going to get our medical, doctor, dental, and other information and it's not enough. Why settle for half a loaf when you can have it ALL?!?!?

Don't think I don't trust you as THUG-IN-CHIEF Johnny boy but ummmm ... I don't trust either you or your little thugs or anyone connected with that crooked union of yours. And recent past events have shown me to be entirely correct ... not a single one of you is trustworthy!!!!!!

Just bunch of aholes.

”All of your money are belong to us!!”

You're entirely correct. Any windfall We the People receive such as a lottery winning, they believe they're ENTITLED to. Not only entitled to but 50%!!! Yeah what we have belong to them.

Ted Cruz wanting to abolish the IRS is enough for me to support him. Go Ted Go!

******

Goals: If the director of the IRS can have goals, then I say that we too can have goals.

My goal and prayer are for the following: The IRS is wiped from the face of the earth as I hope that Muslim ISIS in Iraq is wiped from the face of the earth.

Come to think of it, I don't know which is worse: ISIS or the IRS. Just kidding, I think.

I can see how this will go. You won’t be able to access the IRS website to make a payment, but you’ll be liable for a late-payment penalty.

My son's girl friend is having a similar problem with her bank. Her car payment is set up on "auto debit". The agreed amount is supposed to be taken from her account on a specified day each month. The bank failed to do the debit, then claimed she was late on the payment and added "late" charges.

Hmmm... Your “complete online experience” goal directly conflicts with one of MY goals, which is to AVOID being sodomized, online or otherwise.

We already have an account there, and your “account number” is your social security number. With that, they can easily find your bank and your bank account number. This guy just wants unfettered access to your bank account.

Most people have direct deposit these days, and obama is trying to outlaw “payday loan/check cashing businesses and monitoring withdrawals of 5 K, or more.

What’s the next step? Requiring businesses to send your entire check, and then sending you what the government deems to be “your fair share” to live on?

Windfall?

Does not the govt already believe, upon your death, all you had scrimped, scrapped and saved is (again) a ‘windfall’...able to be taxed and taken as if they were written into the will as persona #1?

I’m still waiting for top ten list where govt DOESN’T tax/fee/toll/etc. ‘Bout all *I’ve* come up with is:

1) Barter/trade
2)
...
10)
