A pacific storm system is expected to bring some much-needed rain and snow to Southern California Tuesday.

Forecasters are calling for showers to reach the Los Angeles basin by Tuesday afternoon, with a chance of rain continuing overnight.

Skies should begin to clear by Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The moderate rain storm was likely to bring about a quarter of an inch to half an inch of rain to Los Angeles and Ventura counties. San Bernardino and Orange counties may receive less than a quarter of an inch of rain, according to the weather service. . .

I’m at work in Irvine, CA. Just looked outside. Few clouds, blue sky, no rain. Bummer.

Still and all, it won’t be enough to break the drought. It is only a brief respite, and the saline lands of the San Joaquin valley will whiten once again.

What the valley needs is perhaps a couple of weeks of torrential downpour, on the order of the monsoons that sweep across the interior of India.

Normally, a semi-arid or desert region cannot stand such an amount of continuous rainfall, as it leads to extensive flooding and water erosion. But the network of irrigation canals and ditches that traverse the entire valley would do much to alleviate that flooding. And get water into the right hands.

“Jerry Brown will force the storm to use 25 percent less water.”

Or the EPA will shop for a Federal judge to cancel the rain.

We have a boat in Ventura. It went in the yard and when it came out it had 2 leaks. I finally found them and fixed them this last weekend. Just in time! Yay!

Taking a page from gun owners faced with uber-restrictive laws, property owners are simply ignoring the idiotic state law. I know several homes in my neighborhood that have barrels set up to catch rainwater. Craigslist has several ads for barrels, valves and filter systems for making drinking water from downspout runoff.

It’s called “nullification” and if enough people do it the state simply can’t prosecute them all.
