Third Great Awakening on the Way?
Townhall.com ^ | April 5, 2015 | Matt Barber

Recently, while announcing his 2016 presidential bid in front of 13,000 onlookers at central Virginia’s Liberty University, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz garnered tremendous applause, saying, “I believe God isn’t done with America yet.”

I think he’s right. Though the forces of evil may try, there are many Christ followers who intend to see spiritual revival break out in this, one of the two greatest nations on earth. “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).”

Before its foundation America first flew the Appeal to Heaven flag. It was the banner George Washington used on his navy ships to signal that their only hope against British rule and religious persecution was an appeal to heaven. The crusade continues today.

Indeed, pockets of revival are breaking out under the appeal to heaven banner across the nation. Some are expecting the next great move of God to emerge under this banner that pictures an evergreen tree on a white flag with the words “An Appeal to Heaven” across the top.

“Our nation is in crisis. It has grown darker over the past six years. It will continue growing darker until we turn back to God as a nation. The good news is when we do, we’ll see a Great Awakening and many souls will come into the kingdom,” says Jennifer LeClaire, senior editor at Charisma magazine, contributor to BarbWire.com and author of “The Next Great Move of God: An Appeal to Heaven for Spiritual Awakening.” “I’m blowing the trumpet. I’m sounding the alarm. There is hope for America, and that hope lies in the body of Christ rising up to do as Jesus commanded: Occupy until I come.”

I want to encourage my readers to pick up “The Next Great Move of God.” LeClaire has become a rising prophetic voice for revival in America. The wisdom she’s been given by the Holy Spirit and the vision she has for God’s move in America is something to which every Christian (and non-believer, for that matter) should pay notice. Jennifer is a fearless voice for Christ’s truth, in love, and has earned my tremendous respect in the years we’ve known each other.

“Sparked in part by a revelation Dutch Sheets received over the course of 12 years,” notes LeClaire, “the nation is being called back to prayer for a Third Great Awakening.” Through in-depth interviews, eyewitness accounts, transcribed speeches and prophetic visions from noted leaders such as Billy Graham, Reinhard Bonnke, the late Steve Hill and others, LeClaire’s “The Next Great Move of God” serves as a means to not only fan the fires of revival unto this awakening but also equip you to sustain it.

“For every prophecy about judgment on America, there seems to be another prophecy about a revival, renewal or awakening. The Lord has spoken to me – and many others – about another Great Awakening,” writes LeClaire. “He told me it would grow darker before the light shines brightly in this nation again. It has indeed grown darker. I believe it will grow darker still, but the darkness will not overpower the light. I see an emerging move of God – the next great move of God; a Third Great Awakening.”

To that I say, Amen.

Events in Indiana, Arkansas and around the world have shown that, as Christ warned, anti-Christian bigotry, hostility and persecution will rise to a great crescendo as we approach the end times. We are witnessing this now. In the Middle East and across the globe, many of our brothers and sisters face great persecution – what I call “hard persecution.” Here in America, radical secularists and Islamists are quickly moving us from a softer persecution into comparable hard persecution. As does LeClaire, I believe that this can be reversed and that we may yet witness a great revival – a Third Great Awakening.

Pick up “The Next Great Move of God” and read fascinating accounts and prophetic visions as to how many of your favorite faithful believe these events will unfold.

So God’s word only applies to Israel?

The One Whom says He does not change?

Why would God act any different to a physical nation that calls His Name, and a nation of spiritual Israelites (read John Cotton’s sermon to the Mayflower Pilgrims) that call His Name as His people in Christ?

If you truly think that the scriptures do not apply to this nation today, I’m sorry for your ignorance. You have a giant surprise coming, and what you have for faith will be tested.

Only a miracle can save America, but it’s too early to rule one out.

Light can overpower darkness, but the darkness cannot overpower light.

Take a lighted candle into any dark room, and see which one wins.

“So God’s word only applies to Israel?”

The promises that are directly tied to His covenant with Israel apply only to Israel.

“The One Whom says He does not change?”

Exactly. He Who made the covenant does not change.

“Why would God act any different to a physical nation that calls His Name, and a nation of spiritual Israelites (read John Cotton’s sermon to the Mayflower Pilgrims) that call His Name as His people in Christ?”

He made specific promises to Israel and specific curses for disobedience. Why would anyone try to steal promises that are not theirs?

“If you truly think that the scriptures do not apply to this nation today, I’m sorry for your ignorance.”

Not ignorance. Read His book. It isn’t all about Christians. We certainly benefit from all His revelation.

So the concept and practice of national repentance and seeking God’s face after plague and calamity are visited upon a nation, only applies to Israel according to your interpretation of scripture?

This is why there is no repentance in the church in this country.

And the Lord is going to laugh at us all in the day of our calamity.

I suggest you slow down a bit and think a bit.

The specific passage - II Chronicles 7:14 - is God’s response to Solomon’s prayer and to understand God’s words to Solomon, you should read what Solomon prayed, which was all based on God’s covenant promises.

If you would like Scripture to base a general blessing that applies to all nations, read Ps. 1; Matt 6:33; Gal. 6:7–8; et al.

“This is why there is no repentance in the church in this country.”

I disagree that this is the root cause. The roots of lack of repentance in our country are far deeper.

We do not have a Christian nation. It certainly has deep Christian influence in its founding. Nor has God promised a Christian nation. He did promise a Jewish nation.

I’m not quite certain your Middle East comment is right on target, but I’m not opposed to the idea that Asia would participate in this.

Perhaps opposition to Islam may bring about what you envision, so I can’t say for certain. Just going with my gut here.

I will be honest though, I do believe that there is fertile ground in the U. S. for people to have a reawakening.

If NBC can put on a program like the Bible Series, and find enough viewership to warrant a follow-on episode, there’s something going on out there.

Easter is still a big deal in America. Sooner or later the media may actually stumble across the fact that Christianity isn’t so “done” in the United States after all.

Obama’s abysmal behavior on behalf of Islam may just open a few people minds to the importance of religion after all.

In certain ways, a follow on to Obama like a Reagan or a Cruz, could double down on a reawakening.

We’ll see.

You may be right, but I’m still of a mind to think we may all be surprised how alive and well Christianity is in the near future.

from Psalm 37

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

* * *

35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

40 And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

We were a spiritual nation of Israel, not led by a man - but by The Spirit. We were a church sent into the wilderness for nurturing to maturity for the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel to the rest of the world without any hindering intervention of potentates or popes to restrain the Spirit leading the church.

To assume II Chronicles 7 has no application to our nation today - and if the exercise of doing verse 14 upon chastisement has no bearing on Our Father following His Word - is absurd.

I’m thankful the Pastors of the First Great Awakening were smarter than we are, and understood the application of verse 14 in the context of “My People, called by My Name” and not ‘My People who are called Israel”.

The cornerstone of our Republic was built on the understanding we were already a self-governing people under God, and no other form of government aside from a Republic was capable of protecting a covenant relationship with people and God, protected by a limited government of men.

Regardless whether or not you would understand that to be a covenant that would have as much biblical application as it did when God spoke to Solomon about what a nation of His people should do when they are chastised for disobedience.

A chastisement is coming. Whether this people who call themselves by His Name will humble themselves and seek His Face and repent of our wickedness, is yet to be seen.

No revival ever came with out repentance first. Somehow, I just don’t see that happening any longer. We have gone too far over the line of no return. We didn’t repent after 9/11. We didn’t repent after the huge earthquake in the 1990s, or the devastating hurricanes or tornadoes over the past 10 years or so. We’ve had one warning after another, but nothing in response. What would cause America to repent, anyway? Probably when ISIS is unleashed in our cities and communities. Maybe. Who knows? Somehow, I think Christians will be blamed for everything from now on, making it even harder for people to want to even consider Christianity. Many who call themselves Christian will abandon the faith, and the ones who stick to their faith will be hunted down as some kind of traitors and misfits, guilty of crimes against humanity for believing the Bible to be God’s Word.

I do believe and sense it that the “prosperity Gospel” is starting to fade even in this society. It is not as popular as it used to be.

I sense a revival is coming and a sure sign of it was how a pizza restraunt got a lot of money support last week after the attacks that came to it from the radical left.

I sense a reawakening is happening, as proof, as you cited, the “A.D.” series. Did catch some of it, fell asleep last night, busy Easter weekend.

If martial law is declared by Obama over something this summer, yes. He is itching to find a way to declare himself emperor. But if not, and there is no repentance, revival will not come. People are still too comfortable, just want to be left alone. That is apathy. Unless something happens to make people do more than just go to a website to help with a few dollars, revival doesn’t have a chance. Revival is more than that. It is a heart condition where people are broken in spirit before the Lord over sin...personal and national. Feeling sorry doesn’t last, but true repentance brings actual change of character and/or behavior. This has to be more than going to church one day and saying we are sorry. Revival brings changes in communities and people’s lives that cannot be explained any other way.

“We were a spiritual nation of Israel, not led by a man - but by The Spirit. We were a church sent into the wilderness for nurturing to maturity for the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel to the rest of the world without any hindering intervention of potentates or popes to restrain the Spirit leading the church.”

Of course, that is quite poetic, but not inspired. As such, it is an opinion. The country was certainly used by God as a sending source for missionaries to the world. Today, missionaries are coming here.

“To assume II Chronicles 7 has no application to our nation today - and if the exercise of doing verse 14 upon chastisement has no bearing on Our Father following His Word - is absurd.”

Well, it does not. There are other verses, some of which I gave you that say similar, but very different things.

“I’m thankful the Pastors of the First Great Awakening were smarter than we are, and understood the application of verse 14 in the context of “My People, called by My Name” and not ‘My People who are called Israel”.”

It is an interesting argument - that the Word of God means what “smart” people think it means... but of course it means what God said and that with a context and His promise and curses to Israel.

“The cornerstone of our Republic was built on the understanding we were already a self-governing people under God, and no other form of government aside from a Republic was capable of protecting a covenant relationship with people and God, protected by a limited government of men.”

Again, an interesting argument with which I agree. This is not a support for stealing from Israel that which was given to her by God.

“Regardless whether or not you would understand that to be a covenant that would have as much biblical application as it did when God spoke to Solomon about what a nation of His people should do when they are chastised for disobedience.”

Repentance is always correct. It “starts with the household of God.”

“A chastisement is coming. Whether this people who call themselves by His Name will humble themselves and seek His Face and repent of our wickedness, is yet to be seen.”

It will likely come. On that we will agree. God’s timetable is His alone.
