Leftists, controlling the courts and the federal legislature (either through democrats or cowardly republicans), are redefining civil rights laws so that they no longer apply in spirit to one and all, but to specific groups by name.
Gays have armies of lawyers in DC, shirtless diners don't, so they're out of luck. So are Christians.
