Lawmaker Calls Colleague’s 18-Month-Old Toddler a Racist

The already contentious debate over Indiana’s proposed “religious freedom” bill took a surreal twist Monday afternoon when — in the midst of discussion on the bill — a Democratic lawmaker said that a Republican lawmaker’s child was “scared” of her because she is black.

The comment by Rep. Vanessa Summers drew audible gasps, in no small part because the child — the son of Rep. Jud McMillin — is 18 months old.

“I told Jud McMillin I love his son, but he’s scared of me because of my color,” Summers told McMillin, who is white, during debate over the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in the House.

“It’s hard,” said Summers, D-Indianapolis. Then, as other lawmakers groaned at the comments, she followed up with, “It’s true.”

“He looked at me like I was a monster and turned around and cried. And I told him you need to introduce your child to some people that are dark-skinned so he will not be scared,” she said.

Maybe, sweetheart, you look scary. 18 month-old babies are not really cognizant. Or maybe the baby is picking up on your racist-ugly vibe. Or maybe YOU are projecting your ugliness on this little baby. tsk tsk

Yeah, lady. It's your skin color that scares little children. Keep telling yourself that...

He looked at you like a monster who thought you were about to devour him, Vanessa.

It's called primal instinct. It's all babies know, bone brain.

Seen her Pic.....it’s not her color that scares the kid.

It’s the primal fear of being eaten alive.

Hey, maybe she has a point?

My Chinese kid took to us immediately. It took a few years before she stopped turning into a zombie whenever she was around Asian women.

Maybe babies can intuit the natural kindness and nurturing demeanor of white people ;)

Really smart child? I wouldn’t have been aware enough to be scared of her until I was much older.

Roz from Monsters Inc.

Like dogs smell fear, little kids can sense evil and crazy.

years ago, my husband and i had a friend, a very large, tall black man... he came to our home and our new Border Collie puppy Spencer started barking at him and backing up at the same time... it was so funny... honestly, we did fell kind of self-conscious about it...

a few years ago we were showing our sons Star Trek: The Next Generation... there was a scene where Worf was doing Mok’bara, and our Beagle Truman started howling at the television... that was funny... :)

I don’t have any kids but love interacting with kids and the one thing I have noticed is that 18 months most healthy kids are shy around strangers they have not been introduced to. it is healthy for a child that has not much experience to be wary of an unknown adult.
