Lawmaker Calls Colleague’s 18-Month-Old Toddler a Racist

The already contentious debate over Indiana’s proposed “religious freedom” bill took a surreal twist Monday afternoon when — in the midst of discussion on the bill — a Democratic lawmaker said that a Republican lawmaker’s child was “scared” of her because she is black.

The comment by Rep. Vanessa Summers drew audible gasps, in no small part because the child — the son of Rep. Jud McMillin — is 18 months old.

“I told Jud McMillin I love his son, but he’s scared of me because of my color,” Summers told McMillin, who is white, during debate over the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in the House.

“It’s hard,” said Summers, D-Indianapolis. Then, as other lawmakers groaned at the comments, she followed up with, “It’s true.”

“He looked at me like I was a monster and turned around and cried. And I told him you need to introduce your child to some people that are dark-skinned so he will not be scared,” she said.

Perfect response:

Oh, no. He’s not racist — I have a white friend who’s fat and ugly; he’s scared of her too.

“Roz from Monsters Inc.”

Ha ha that’s funny, she does look like her.

I can’t believe a grown woman doesn’t know nothing about babies.

Well, studies have been done showing babies photos and attractive and unattractive people. The babies tended to look at and smile at the photos of attractive people and avoid the others. Maybe Vannessa doesn’t present such an attractive persona.

My dog must be a racist too, because I’m pretty sure he’d growl at her.

My little yorkipoo-dog is more wary of male strangers than female strangers - I think it is because their voices are lower pitched. Yet, within a few minutes she is all over their legs trying to get attention and some petting from them.

Kids generally react very shyly when a new person enters their space. Why on earth would this person jump to such conclusions about a toddler?

Gotta love this comment from the site: Silly politician — lots of kids are afraid of clowns.

I suspect the child may have shown shyness just because the woman is a stranger, or perhaps because of the glasses. Sometimes a hat throws them off, too.

It has been my experience that children do not notice racial differences until they are about 3.

Probably the kid was afraid of her glasses or something else other than skin tone. The woman is an outdoor to assume it was her color. imagining racism under every rock.

In the course of my job over many years, I used to go in homes in South Central LA, oh, wait, we must call it “South Los Angeles” these days. I am white, and many little kids who were black were very wary of me at first, as I looked different than the folks they were used to seeing. Most warmed up very soon, and I made an effort to not frighten them in any way. I suspect this lady puts out negative vibes to the kids she’s talking about, and the kids know it. She is likely expecting, and looking for, racism at every turn.
