As for pure numbers. There are only around 500,000 people in Newfoundland & Labrador. That means the Homosexual population is around 4,000 - 9,000. k.

A Quick calculation (using the larger 9k estimate) shows them to be about 1.8 percent of the population. Right at the mark of the latest best surveyed data.

Already this year — in less than three months — 15 cases of syphilis have been reported...Most of the 41 syphilis infections were identified in homosexual men...

Icky, but not surprising. Here in the U.S., gay and bisexual men account for a staggering percentage of both new HIV and new and secondary stage syphilis infections. The HIV number is nearly 70% just accounting for gay/bi men 25 and under. I’m not sure of the exact percentages for syphilis, but I would imagine it’s also quite high. I can’t imagine it’s really any different in Canada. The mechanics of that sort of sexual activity is just a perfect vector for disease transmission.
