Asians beware - Top marks largely go to Asians. Bill de Blasio wants to change the exams
The Economist ^ | 14.Mar.2015 | Economist

Posted on 03/24/2015 10:00:53 PM PDT by Cronos

..New York has nine specialised high schools, of which eight admit students using the city’s Specialist High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The education they offer rivals that of private schools that charge $40,000 a year. The high schools are free. The most popular, Stuyvesant, sends roughly 25% of its graduates to the Ivy League or other top colleges. The school’s unofficial mantra is “Sleep, study, socialise: pick two.” It admits 4% of test-takers, pickier than Harvard.

New York’s Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio thinks the SHSAT favours parents who can afford tutors. He wants to “broaden” (ie, relax) the admissions criteria, to help poorer black and Hispanic families.

The SHSAT also faces a legal challenge. The NAACP, the country’s biggest civil-rights legal defence fund, joined others in 2012 to file a suit demanding changes in admissions procedures. New York City’s public schools, the suit claims, are among the most racially segregated in the country

... Asians make up more than 70% of pupils at Stuyvesant; blacks and Hispanics combined make up 3%, and falling. White pupils took 80% of places in 1970; now it is less than 25%.

“Asians make up more than 70% of pupils at Stuyvesant; blacks and Hispanics combined make up 3%, and falling.”

What is AMAZING is that the school made it THIS FAR based on merit. Good for them, and the kids. This country received a lot of FINE people because they held their ground.

So now the “Chickens have come home to roost”. I cannot help wondering how many of those parents voted for Deblasio and vote Democrat on a regular basis. It’s not all their fault, though. Everything they read says that Republicans will again throw them in Internment Camps if they ever get power again (even though it was a Democrat back then). But the Republicans are too PATHETIC to try to reach these people - instead they spend all their money trying to destroy the Tea Party. But now things are different, money will not destroy Cruz, and neither will he collapse.

Stuyvesant has massive problems with cheating in recent years.

Perhaps in prehistory, during a time no one remembers. Chinese thinkers of 2300 years ago do not compare favorably against the Greeks of that time.

Actually, they were brilliant, which is how China's rulers built an empire that quintupled in size, had the most densely-populated territory on marginal land in antiquity, thanks to advanced agricultural techniques, and is pretty close to its largest territorial extent today while absorbing large numbers of aborigines, who now think of themselves as Chinese the way Arvanites see themselves as Greek. Whereas Greece fell under Roman domination mere centuries after its heyday. Chinese thinkers focused on statecraft and engineering. Greek thinkers focused on the abstract. Machiavelli's The Prince merely restated principles developed by Chinese thinkers 2000 years before him. If a Greek Machiavelli had enumerated the basic principles of statecraft during Greece's heyday, all of Europe, Persia, North Africa and Central Asia would be Greek-speakers today, thanks to Alexander's efforts. Instead, Greece was overrun repeatedly by hordes of foreigners, and the largest population of Greeks in the world, genetically-speaking, is in Turkey (Anatolia), except these Greeks speak, and identify as, Turkish.

And that would be the final step in the tragedy: dumbing down the schools.

This has been going on since at least the early 1990s. Was the guy’s name Fernandez, from Florida, who wanted to eliminate the schools completely? They changed schools chancellors like their underwear.

Stuy is of course near Chinatown. The kids go there if they possibly can, and they can.

By the way, the NY Philharmonic also has lots of Asians. They make musicians audition behind a curtain so prejudices can’t intervene.

Don’t destroy the meritocracy, folks. Wake up to American greatness.

It isn’t about embracing communism. I reject the premise that American taxes should be funding American schools in America that are run by foreign standards, to the exclusion of Americans. Especially since it’s the AMERICAN education system that invented the modern age, everything from steam power to the moon landing to Silicon Valley.

Once again, there's this premise that Asian Americans aren't real Americans. Maybe you'd be more comfortable posting on Stormfront rather than Free Republic.

Remember when you said we shouldn't lift a finger to help Christians in the middle east? And now you have the nerve to demand support for all the poor chinese who could not make it into Harvard, but had to go to Yale instead.

Liberals refuse to accept the fact that certain cultures value learning and achievement, while others moan about discrimination and blame their failures on Whitey’s exams.

Plus the genetic factor: verifiable differences in intellectual ability.

Hmmm. Perhaps the wholesale offshoring of entire industries from the United States, and massive theft of intellectual property, and the use of sweatshops to a degree which would have made the robber barons of Industrial Revolution England blush, and industrial pollution on a scale never before seen in the history of the planet, had nothing to do with China's growth.

Arab Christians in the Mid East are not Americans. We owe them nothing. Asian Americans are Americans. Although from your perspective, Asian Americans are just mud people, whereas Arab Christians are white people, so we should spend blood and treasure not merely rescuing them, but importing them into this country.

There have been many idiots who have achieved great success. Look at all the billionaires who are socialists and believe in government. what could be dumber than believing in government/socialism? the facebook creep, Warrren Buffet , Bill Gates, soros, lewis, countless other billionaires trust government and that’s idiotic. these imbeciles should know the socialists will take all their money first and that socialism can never work. these billionaires are dumb so it’s not their intelligence that go them there.

____________

these people do not TRUST government, they are sleeping with government. They are PAID by government.

Yes the demographics of these schools somewhat reflect the demographics of the nieborhood my child was also accepted at Stuy, but it would have been about a 2 hour commute each way every day on top of the extra work. Most people in their right mind would forego that challenge if they have other options.

The one-child policy gave China a bunch of surplus young men, suitable for use in military escapades: but the median age in China is rocketing upwards. If they don't go taking over the world militarily *SOON*, the surplus of old people will bite them on the ass.

If you have three baggies of crack, 5 joints an two cubes of lsd, how many highs can you get?

If crack costs $20 per bag, how many purses do you need to snatch to get the money?

If you have three kids and each gets you $60 per month, will one more add enough to your EBT to make it worth the hassle?

So why isn't Africa, which is closer to Europe and the US, the factory to the world? Why does Jamaica, where piracy is rampant have a lower (~$5K) GDP per capita than China (~$7K) despite being right next to the biggest single market in the world? Why aren't India (~$1.5K) and Pakistan (~$1.3K), which have similar conditions and are half the distance to Europe by water transport, advancing at the same rate? Note that these are countries that did not go through anywhere the same amount of consecutive turmoil (civil war, foreign invasion, civil war, Marxist economic policies) from 1911 to 1979, and yet have 1/4 or less of China's per capita industrial output.

One other thing I might mention, is that they used to make the rankings public, back when my kid was in 8th grade. I don’t know whether they still do. They would actually read off the rankings in the middle school classroom. A lot of parents objected to this, so they have probably stopped doing it. If they haven’t, it’s a thought that maybe they should. It wouldn’t change things much but it would keep tempers down.
