The Fair and Relevant Question: After 8 Years of Obama, Why Should GOP Nominate a One-Term Senator?
Red State ^ | 03/23/2015 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 03/23/2015 7:56:28 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

With Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) beginning his run for the Presidency today, I should make public the question I've suggested to reporters in private.

Senator Cruz is for certain going to be joined by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who will announce in a few weeks.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who I think is underrated in his bid for the Presidency even though Jeb Bush is intent on locking up Florida, will also most likely declare his candidacy.

All three of these men would make excellent Presidents. I know them personally. I backed them when they were at single digits in the polls. I pray for them regularly. I like them all.

Still, I think they have to answer a question those who come from Governor's Mansions will not. That question is this:

For six years, Republicans have said the nation made a mistake electing a one term Senator the President of the United States. Why should you, a one term Senator, be the GOP's nominee?

Given Republican rhetoric against President Obama for six years, it is fair and relevant. I look forward to their answers.

Because we are not sure who Obama’s parents were, because exactly who his father was is in question.

Because Ted Cruz is a man of God who deeply loves America, and Obama is nothing of the sort...

Exactly! I believe that's a lot more important than anybody's party affiliation or level of experience.

We need a humble, patriotic American who truly believes in limited government and is willing to work towards one.

I actually believe Cruz will be better than Reagan in some respects.

So, any one term senator candidate is by definition an anti American, petulant, incompetent, marxist? Isn’t that a bit of a stretch?

"Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who I think is underrated in his bid for the Presidency . . . "

Isn't Rubio also a first-termer?

Walker used to be against the ethanol lobby which he now supports, and he is wavering on other previous conservative views. I think the advice he is listening to is going to hurt him.

Cruz, on the other hand, sticks to his beliefs and is able to communicate why they are best with compelling arguments.

My objection to Obama has always been his ideology

And you don't need Harvard law degrees to have the right ideology, leadership and character to be president. At that level you can surround yourself with the best legal minds possible. But one needs those leadership skills to hire the right associates...The real experts.

It’s not about experience - it’s first of all about values, second about leadership and third about communication.

The primary problem with Obama is that he is a Leftist, not that he is inexperienced. In any event, the three Senators all have similar or more political experience than Lincoln did when he was elected.

More recently, in 1966, Ronald Reagan was elected Governor of California. Less than two years later, he ran for President, losing the GOP nomination though to Richard Nixon. On the whole, the country would have been far better served had Reagan won the nomination and the Presidency in 1968 instead of Nixon.

With the public soured on the country's political establishment and its performance, a relative lack of experience can be more of an asset than a liability. When it seems that all the apples on the table and in the pantry have gone bad, it makes sense to go out to the orchard and pick a fresh one.

Eric has earned his stripes. He wants us to be prepared.

Many of us used that among the litany of reasons Bark Obama is a failure. The opposition is eager to try it against our guy, now.

Are we ready to answer?

See comment #12. We can memorize it.

Perhaps it’s because Ted Cruz is far more than a one term Senator? He has an impressive resume and a record of consistency, something none of the other candidates have.

I recall that there was a time when the US elected a one term Congressman. His name was...what was it....oh yeah.... Lincoln.

I don't know Erick Erickson.

You haven't missed much. He is basically a run of the mill mouthy blogger. Heard him subbing for Rush one day recently. Definitely a bench-warmer.

Good point. Carter was both Senator and Gov! What did that get us?

Please. If you are going to stick your neck out get it right. Carter was a state senator only; not a US Senator.

The problem with Barry Soetoro is not and never was “inexperience”.

Choom Gang Barry is not ineffective. He is destructive malevolent and evil.

Candidates from Governor’s mansions have to answer a different question: Why did you sell out your conservative principles?
