First Lady Michelle Obama’s visit to a Buddhist Temple in Kyoto is costing taxpayers nearly $80,000 for rental cars, according to a government contract.
Mrs. Obama, who is traveling to Japan and Cambodia for a girls’ education initiative, will arrive in Kyoto, Japan, on Friday.
According to the White House press office, “The First Lady will travel to Kyoto on March 20 and visit the Kiyomizu-Dera Buddhist Temple and the Fushimi Inari Shinto Shrine. She will also greet staff from the U.S. Consulate in Osaka.” …

Let's guestimate some numbers. Say she visits the temple with three or four members of her personal staff, half a dozen embassy escorts, and four reporters from the pool. Round it up to 20. With Michelle and one staffer in her car and three passengers in the other cars, she needs seven cars. She would also have a Secret Service detail, but the embassy and the Japanese government would be providing security as well. Assuming they rented top of the line cars with the gold plated rims, maybe the cars should run $5,000, and that's wildly generous, assuming six or eight cars for the Secret Service.
If this were Chicago, we would know where the missing $75,000 went; it would just be a question of whose pocket got lined. But this was Japan, and an embassy-arranged gig, with embassy and Japanese escorts who have their own vehicles. I hope a congressional committee asks for a breakout of the costs.

The amount of money being spent on these people is disgusting. There should be a law passed that for every expenditure a certain % has to be paid by the president and his family or anyone else benefiting from the trip.

The vacation expenses are SUPPOSED to be all THEIRS. The travel expenses are in a budget for the WH but if anyone can find out what the WH budget items are, more power to them. I can’t find anything definitive on the subject. It looks like it would take a FOIA request to dig them out.
They are disgusting in every way and particularly in the spendthrift category. He can stand up and preach all day about income inequality (as she can also) and think up ways to redistribute income and yet gives not a nod to the amount of money put out for him and his exploits by the MIDDLE CLASS WAGE EARNER who he feels pity for!

I thought Japan allowed their girls to be educated. Moochelle should try a visit to Pakistan, or Afghanistan, if she really cares about educated young women and not just a lovely personally vacation.
How in the heck can rental cars cost that much? Rented limos with drivers wouldn’t cost that much. Maybe she has 78 limos at $1k ea to carry all her squad she takes with her everywhere.
I suspect this is just like when the Super Bowl or Final 4 comes to town. Everything skyrockets in price.
