THIS is the wall of grey which residents of Wolloomooloo and Potts Point now wake up to thats if theyve managed to get to sleep.
They say the 27,800 tonne HMAS Canberra has obliterated their views of the harbour, spewed oil fumes into their homes and kept them awake with the groan of engines and generators since it arrived to fanfare in November.
"Its just so depressing ... its all those things and theyre constant, said one resident, Catherine Regan.
But the Department of Defence has confirmed, not only will the 27.5m-high helicopter landing dock stay indefinitely at the Garden Island base, she will be joined by sister vessel NUSHIP Adelaide before the end of the year.
HMAS Canberra was built to give Australia one of the worlds best amphibious deployment systems and was launched before thousands of defence personnel, politicians and members of the public in late November.

HMAS Canberra (and her sister Adelaide which is still undergoing final fit out and is not yet commissioned) is the largest warship Australia has ever put to sea. While she certainly isn't as large as the full size Aircraft Carriers a few navies (like the USN has - of course, the USN has most of the world's large carriers) she's a sizeable ship so I can understand she's surprised some of these people - but they chose to live next to a Naval base.
If I was in charge, and they kept complaining, I'd probably start dropping hints about the idea that with two large ships like that we might need to expand the Naval base and compulsorily acquire nearby homes... or maybe there's just a need for us to get some new housing near the base for the sailors who serve on these ships.
Nice looking ship.
Would they prefer the sight of a Chinese or Russian war ship right there?
Choices, choices...
Maybe a mosque? ISIS flags?
...or, some night-time touch & go exercises from the stationery ship.
They will need to practice helicopter operations...
It is a Big ship
If this a helicopter carrier, why the ramp on the bow?
Officially because she’s based off a Spanish Aircraft Carrier design and it was cheaper to keep the ramp than replace it.
Unofficially - it gives us more potential ways to use her in the future. If the F-35B proves a decent choice, some would like us to acquire some of those (including me - I’ve never liked the fact that the Labor government of the 1980s decommissioned our last Aircraft Carrier without replacing her), not to mention that she might also be useful as an extra deck in joint operations with the Royal Navy (flying the F-35Bs they are already going to acquire) or the USN (USMC Harriers or F-35Bs once they are in service).
Don’t see a lot of weapon’s.....on the port or starboard sides!
Thank you for the info, and your service, Digger.
Oh, how leftists absolutely loathe effective weapons.
At least, when Free Men wield them.
Her primary defence is intended to be her escorts - just as it is with most carriers. But she is mounted with four 25mm remote weapon systems for close defence, as well as mounted machine guns - and there’s places where other things can be added later as well.

Yeah, go block the views of poor people.
Yes! A huge Saudi floating mega-mosque with ISIS flags all-around. Woo-hoo, and beheadings for all.
HMAS Canberra (How do the Aussies label their ships, anyways?)
HMAS = Her Majesty’s Australian Ship, based off the British HMS (Her Majesty’s Ship). We’re still a constitutional monarchy under Elizabeth II, in her right as Queen of Australia, and it’s still the Royal Australian Navy.
