Long read but it gets worse and worse. The leaf was most likely put into the kid's backpack by other kids and they turned him in. Three field tests showed it wasn't marijuana. Didn't matter as there was zero tolerance even with imitation drugs. Kid was suspended for 365 days, sent for drug abuse evaluation and would be searched coming and going when the suspension was up. Kid supposedly is depressed and behind in his schooling now.

Great, so now we gotta check the kids to make sure a chunk of houseplant didn;t follow them to school......
Zero Tolerance laws equate to zero common freeking sense in enforcement...
Of course there is NO Zero Tolerance laws for Government E-mail servers....
Let them eat their Zero Tolerance Laws

I agree with one of the comments. Principal, Administrators and Teachers banned for life from teaching. I add treated like child molestors in regard to proximity to schools. Because it wasn’t marijuana and they knew it, Perhaps The ditrict. Principals should be sued to bankruptcy as well.

The couple both are schoolteachers have filed a federal lawsuit against Bedford County Schools and the Bedford County Sheriffs Office. That sounds appropriate. Sue the county for millions with the option that they will forgo a monetary settlement if every single jackass involved is fired and banned from ever holding a gov job again.

I didn’t see that comment but apparently I’m on the same track. It should include all the sheriff’s officers and all other county employees as well not just the teachers and school administrators. Scorch the earth and salt it!

Meanwhile, Saint Trayvon has been canonized.
White people can’t catch a break... they’re supposed to conform to rules no one can keep up with, work ‘til they drop to support other’s kids, and delay family formation themselves until they can “get ahead.”

DID the kid “brag” about having MJ, or did the other kids lie and set him up? If other kids did so they should be penalized the same way their victim was.
As for the suspension, a lot of kids would look on that as a reward rather than a punishment! No school!

Zero tolerance is a step to get the school administrators used to following the orders of a central authority without question.

What you really have here is police officers and school administrators getting out their “jump to conclusions mat.” They just absolutely hate being wrong once they have landed on their favorite conclusion, and will cling to it no matter who it destroys.
I’m surprised they didn’t fudge the lab results.

Kid supposedly is depressed and behind in his schooling now. If both parents are teachers there is no excuse for him being behind in his schooling.

Learned a valuable lesson about rules, bureaucracy, and stupidity. He’s living in a world full of all of them, and it’ll only get worse.

I see it more as a case of school admins giving free reign to their inner petty tyrant.
There are no excuses. No possible legit rationalizations. This, and all the cases like it, which are legion, are nothing more than moral cowardice and gross incompetence.

Intent should have been proven. If the child said it wasn’t his...then it should have been investigated - even though that is a common defense applied in the drug world...sad...absolutely sad...even though drugs found may not be what they are tested to be - selling with intent to distribute still applies to fake drugs...

Then that would be tampering with evidence, the resulting felony of which would send them to jail.

One of my neighbors pulled up a seedling I had planted at the back of my lot. I had to explain it was a Japanese Maple.

Even if a 6th Grader had a marijuana leaf in his backpack, unless he exhibited other signs of trouble, why the Hell should he get expelled for a year. Kids make mistakes. A year suspension is a draconian punishment that very likely could mess up his life. Zero tolerance has turned teachers into fascists.

Once “educators” prove they easily can be fascists and child-abusers. The sheriff’s deputy is also a fascist idiot.
