Barris says the network used to really complain when he put Gene on the air. He really was just a janitor, but the minute he wound up on camera they had to pay him about 10 times as much. By that point Chuck was so tired of the business his answer to most network complaints were “so fire me”.

I loved the unknown comic with the paper bag over his head. He once appeared with another comic, supposedly his father. he too had a bag over his head but it had been crumpled up and was all wrinkled. Too funny.
Remember the Gong Show’s ‘Popsicle Twins’ bit? (About 60 seconds of 2 about 16, iirc, year old girls sucking on popsicles). J.P then cracks: “That’s how I got my start”! (Or close to that, been a few years) She was great!

I have seen episodes where it was beyond obvious that everyone was whacked out of their minds on drugs at the filming for The Gong Show. Craft Services musta had a folding table with a mountain of cocaine on it.
Great show.

I remember watching once and about 2 minutes into the show they went to Gene-Gene. They kept going right on through the closing credits, and into the next day’s show.
