University of Oklahoma Fraternity Closed Due to Video of Racist Chant

Sigma Alpha Epsilon's national headquarters closed its chapter at the University of Oklahoma Sunday after a video emerged purportedly showing members of the chapter singing a racist chant.

The video quickly gained visibility online. It was obtained and posted to Twitter by Unheard, which describes itself as "an alliance of Black students organized for change within campus administration and atmosphere," shows young men on a bus chanting "There will never be a n----r at SAE."

The tweet, directed at OU president David Boren, says "Racism is alive at The University of Oklahoma."

Students at the university plan to demonstrate on the Norman, Oklahoma campus at 7:30 a.m. local time. A prayer vigil was held Sunday night.

Chelsea Davis, one of two co-directors of Unheard, said the video was recorded during the weekend. Unheard was begun at the beginning of the semester to demand change, especially relating to diversity issues, Davis said.

"Clearly in that video, that is nothing new. That is nothing that just sparks up overnight. That is a chant that was well known, well versed, and seemed to be okay with everybody that was involved," said Davis, a junior at the university.

It’s a good thing that anti-Semitism is ok, otherwise there would be a long list of university closings.

The 1A says that GOVERNMENT can't suppress your speech and throw you in jail for saying stupid things the gov't may not like. SAE is a frat, not the gov't.

SAE is basically saying, "you are free to spew vile hatred, but you're not going to do it while representing our organization. So you're out."

Are these kids being prosecuted? No. Are their freedoms being taken away? Nope. They got thrown out of a private organization. Which is perfectly fine and legal.

Of course its a 1A issue. These young men are free to say whatever they want. And they did. And they won’t be arrested. No one will drag them away. But there are also consequences.

Go in and tell your boss what you think about him. You’re free to do so. Doesn’t mean there won’t be repercussions.

Sure, they can get the crap beat out of them for being morons, but free speech, dammit.

The Constitution guarantees the government will not prevent you from speaking freely. It does not guarantee that the parent organization of your fraternity chapter won't kick your idiot asses out for saying stupid things.

I wasn't claiming it was. I was just asking you to state your reasons it wasn't.

Your argument is sound.

This is so disgusting. I wish these idiot white boys would get the crap beat out of them.

OK, somebody says something you find offensive, so you wish that they be violently assaulted. Explain to me how this is a "conservative" viewpoint?

Would you be similarly OK with campus feminists having the crap beaten out of them when they say something that some people find disgusting and idiotic?

We’re beginning to sound like liberal progressives.

“Sure, you’re free to say and think anything you like, as long as I agree with what you say and think....and I don’t get offended....and my friends don’t get offended. Unless you’re talking about Republicans, white policemen or any white people - then you can say anything you want.”

(That sort of [non-]thinking is similar to my tagline)

Did SAE national take action because they were personally offended? Or because they don't want the blow-back from both government and leftist university administrations if they fail to treat the frat harshly? Keeping in mind that the idiots on the bus were not the WHOLE frat, and the WHOLE frat is being punished, not just the perps.

I hope you're not insinuating that I was advocating these young imbeciles not be free to spew hatred. I'm not. They can say whatever they want.

However, I also hope their names and faces are plastered all over the net and no one hires them and their families are humiliated.

Wouldn't you be offended if someone associated with your organization did that?

Keeping in mind that the idiots on the bus were not the WHOLE frat, and the WHOLE frat is being punished, not just the perps.

Yeah well life isn't fair, and any fraternity that fosters an environment where those actions are tolerated deserves what happens to it.

I don’t think anyone has argued it is illegal. No one was arrested but it is morally indefensible, at least to me.

With posters on FR displaying increasingly negative opinions about "The Amish" and "Obama's Sons", at what point will you be advocating that FR gets shut down?

I can't speculate on the motives of a nationally respected fraternity. All I know is they got it right.

What happened to this chapter is indicative of what happens to so many organizations: the few ruin it for the many.

It’s not acceptable to have racist admissions policies for any organization.

Or is it?

Really?

What a ‘conservative’ view point.

Maybe you advocate for beating the crap out of Sharpton, Jackson, Wright, Holder, etc? The list of anti-whites is quite extensive and long...or maybe you only advocate beating white boys?

Well, I wouldn’t cry if Sharpton, Jackson, Wright, Holder, etc. got beat up.

FR is a private business. The Robinsons may shut it down whenever they wish if the content becomes something they do not support. Or, they can simply banish users with whom they don't agree (and they have done this).

All the tongue-in-cheek references you are talking about usually involve specific instances in which criminals are identified through racial components all too often left out of the media's narrative.

I see a difference between doing that and singing a racist chant in public while actively representing a private organization.

“How many students will be out ready to demonstrate at 7:30am? I’ll believe that when I see it.”

Here’s some video of the crowd. For 7:30 in the dark, there are a fair number of people there. 150 maybe? Not a lot.
