University of Oklahoma Fraternity Closed Due to Video of Racist Chant

Sigma Alpha Epsilon's national headquarters closed its chapter at the University of Oklahoma Sunday after a video emerged purportedly showing members of the chapter singing a racist chant.

The video quickly gained visibility online. It was obtained and posted to Twitter by Unheard, which describes itself as "an alliance of Black students organized for change within campus administration and atmosphere," shows young men on a bus chanting "There will never be a n----r at SAE."

The tweet, directed at OU president David Boren, says "Racism is alive at The University of Oklahoma."

Students at the university plan to demonstrate on the Norman, Oklahoma campus at 7:30 a.m. local time. A prayer vigil was held Sunday night.

Chelsea Davis, one of two co-directors of Unheard, said the video was recorded during the weekend. Unheard was begun at the beginning of the semester to demand change, especially relating to diversity issues, Davis said.

"Clearly in that video, that is nothing new. That is nothing that just sparks up overnight. That is a chant that was well known, well versed, and seemed to be okay with everybody that was involved," said Davis, a junior at the university.

Wow. You REALLY didn't get my point. This IS free speech. It's NOT a 1A issue.

Let me put this in perspective and ask you a simple question:

You own a company. You plan a company picnic. All your employees get on a bus that you've rented for them and you are all on your way to the picnic. On the way, your employees break out into the chants that these frat guys were yelling. Someone posts this on YouTube and it goes viral. Do you fire them? It's a Yes or No question.

That racist chant is taught and practiced by all SAE chapters. It is a part of their national legacy.

As I said earlier it could be recast as a matter of attitude. They don’t have N*rs any more than they have Cr*s. They’re determined to be above that gutter level stuff.

The university owns the SAE house and gave the members until midnight tomorrow to move their stuff out.

Nope, but I have never done anything to get the crap beat out of me. If I did something to antagonize someone to the point of beating me up, well, it would be on me. I am smart enough to know when to keep my mouth shut and at least not to put it on video.

You realize that it was not the frat boys who made the video, but somebody on the bus who was offended at their behavior and decided to record and post it?

You also realize that there are easily offended people out there, like this woman who got upset over people advocating a pro-life position?

This is really a silly discussion. What I write on FR will in no way cause these clowns to be physically assaulted. You do realize that, don’t you?

Tolerance for the idea that it is acceptable to "beat the crap" out of somebody over offensive speech DOES contribute to an environment where the perpetually-offended feel safe in administering violence when offended.

The university has a code of conduct and can expel students for various infractions.

“It’s not acceptable to have racist admissions policies for any organization.

Or is it?”

Yes it is. Its called affirmative action these days.

Free speech does not mean freedom from consequences. The University is not legally or ethically obligated to let them do and say things which reflect badly on the school.

Somewhere someone is making a moral judgement. Not sure if restricting "speech" before the fact is a workable argument. This is one of those broad gray areas that are difficult to nail down as to what is exactly the right thing to do. I guess it all depends on what "conduct" is, and whether it can be regarded as advancing an idea or has a political component.

I should not be surprised to discover that "conduct" codes are going to be/have been slowly modified until they conform to modern PC Liberalism.

In letter to tenured professor John McAdams, Marquette officials say they’ve begun the process of firing him

Faith and spirituality affect the way teaching, learning, research and living take place on campus. Students, faculty and staff of every religious tradition are invited to engage in conversations about faith, God, social justice, the search for truth, the desire for peace, global issues, ethics and the dignity of humanity. A Catholic and Jesuit education at Marquette is marked by the active intersection of the Gospel with culture and the intellect, as well as a deep commitment to the well-being of the whole human family.

Not really true, is it?

OU President and former Senator Boren is a politician after all; he puts image above everything else.

After SAE yanked their charter or license or whatever it is. So the people living there are frat boys without a frat. I assume the university will offer the house to another fraternity.

I am not black but chanting about hanging blacks is offensive to me. If it isn’t offensive to you, I would ask why not?

Just how long do you suppose they would last if
they were...””.”an alliance of White students organized for change within campus administration and atmosphere,”

The lot of them would be sent in for psychotherapy and
re-education.

They would probably just be expelled.

Just because something is offensive is not a reason to wish physical injury to come to somebody. As I said earlier, making pro-life arguments is offensive to some, and making arguments against gay marriage is offensive to others.

By giving sanction to using violence as a response to offense in one case, you give sanction to using violence as a response to offense in general.

And you would be OK with that?

There is something off about this story and this videotape - who made it and who was the guy in the suit?

Boren is known for his knee-jerk reactions, and SAE has long been in the PC crosshairs.
