Many of the very same people who claim that lethal injections are cruel and unusual punishment (when administered to convicted murderers) — many of these people also support “assisted suicide” or euthanasia (of people, who have committed no crimes), using these same chemicals. They don’t even see the contradictions.
No. Nitrogen asphyxiation is not detected by the human body. This is due to our atmosphere being 70+ percent nitrogen. The condition is so well know that it has an MSDS sheet. From that sheet:
Exposure to atmospheres containing 8-
10% or less oxygen will bring about unconsciousness without warning and so quickly that the
individuals cannot help or protect themselves
This is a good option for those not wanting to spend too much on training executioners.
I'm personally fond of the gallows, complete with hymn singing just to p*$$ off the ACLU. The sudden drop, jerk and twisting in the wind afterward provides the dramatic effect of a powerful deterrent without the blood, which nitrogen asphyxiation will not.
But it does kick people off the planet effectively who seriously need killing.
The animals were on a moving conveyor which slowly moved them thru a CO2 chamber for about a three minute period until they lost consciousness and exited. At the exit point we spun a cinching chain around their back leg and an electric hoist inverted them to head facing down. They were unconscious at this point. We then slit their throats and collected the blood in a gutter where it was sent for processing. The animal never felt a thing.
Now cattle were different. Their conveyor involved a pneumatic fired spike with an electrical charge right bettween the eyes. That was more worker safe and much higher speed in the process.
The gas filled rooms involved an elaborate safety system for hazardous confined entry permits. It was my job to fix anything that broke or stopped working. Atmospheric testing and flushing needed to be monitored by a person outside the room while you wore a harness so you could be dragged out to safety if you stopped talking on the radio which had to be every 30 seconds.
I took a hit of 100% nitrogen by mistake in the lab, things got awfully dark in seconds. it has the the same effect as a hypobaric chamber, very pleasnt way uo go.
Too complex. I realize that there has to be a certain amount of ritual involved, to sooth the delicate feelings of your average Liberal. However, with nitrogen, building a gas tight can big enough to keep witnesses safe is expensive and not required. They were using hydrogen cyanide with gas chambers in Cali, and a leak there would wipe out any number of "witnesses" getting off on watching someone die. A little nitrogen leaking around the edges of a mask won't be even noticed.
I'm biased. I think the death penalty should be reserved for politicians. We would have cleaner government or smarter crooks.
Inhumane? Yes, but so where those actions that deserve such a treatment. Appropriate treatment while sending them to their ultimate judgement.
Yeah. I always put eyes on the O2 sensor before opening the door.

The problem with using gases to execute is that the condemned must cooperate, holding their breath until they gasp and inhale a whole bunch of gas. If the condemned continues to breathe normally, they suffocate slowly and painfully, taking much longer to die.
Yet another reason for states to have the firing squad as an alternative means of execution. Cheap, low tech, certain, and needing no special equipment, supplies or expertise.
Lock out/tag out seems like one of those excessive OSHA mandated safety procedures - until the day it saves someone’s life. Where I worked it involved heavy pieces of machinery which somebody had to go inside of to troubleshoot.
One worker guarded the circuit breaker & another monitored the service hatchway until the inside man finished his work and had emerged safely.

We have clip on sensors that measure N2, O2, methane, and CO2. If O2 drops below 18% you need to get out of the area immediately. It’ll give an irritatingly loud beep so others can hear. Nitrogen is the big killer though. Some workers will climb down the ladder into a N2 filled chamber only to suddenly fall off the ladder unconscious. Usually it doesn’t end well.
I’ve been advocating for nitrogen executions. It’s the most peaceful way to go. They can hold their breaths but once they gulp a lung full, they pass out and breathe automatically.
I once did this with helium, yeah, thinking I would enhance the voice effects by taking more than one breath..
Boom, I was down in seconds. No pain, panic, nothing, just out...
Not for very long ...

I worked for a place that kept a nitrogen atmosphere on one of the floors, they said that if you broke the rules and spent time in it without a partner and gear, that there was no warning that you were passing out and dying, that it totally sneaked up on you.
I went in many times alone and without gear, but I didn’t spend much time there.
