How Much More Economic Pain Can Vladimir Putin Take?
Yahoo ^ | 2 Feb 15 | Matthew Philips

It’s been a little more than six months since the full brunt of Western sanctions took force against Russia. The punishment, while slow in coming, has proven devastatingly effective—especially when paired with the crash in oil prices.

Two years, then Putin would be in real trouble.

Btw - two years is what Putin predicted till improvement with the economy.

All America’s enemies are laughing, and some Americans are pleased too with Obama’s follies and the rising threat of Putin, Iran, Hezbollah, ISIS, Al Qaeda, and the myriad of threats now more serious than ever.

It was Japan’s choice to be an aggressor and our calling as a free nation to counter them anyway we could. All actions have consequences that need to be considered in the light of history. Can we find a less undesirable response to aggression and irregardless are we prepared to bear the consequences?

The fall in the crude oil prices hurt the Russian economy far worse than the sanctions. The oil prices is the fundamental problem which Mr. Putin has failed to resolve in 15 years.

The sanctions following the acquisition of the Crimea populated with ethnic Russians, who have been generally happy of this, is a good explanation of the economic hardship. Suffering becomes justified with this.

The economy will rise again sooner or later, but years of hardship will bring a gain.

Westerners by and large do not understand the ability of russians to withstand pain.

For being “devastatingly effective” they haven’t budged the Russians an inch.

Correction: the problem that Putin has failed to resolve is not the oil prices themselves, but the Russian economic dependence on them.

“All actions have consequences...are we prepared to bear the consequences?”

When FDR cut off oil and scrap metal to Japan he understood that they had two choices, attack us or stop their aggression in China. The fact that we were not ready for the attack is probably due to normalcy bias. The West’s present actions against Russia present even more challenge than FDR’s actions presented to the Japanese. We assume that since nuclear weapons have not been used in the past that Putin will not use them in the future. This is normalcy bias and assumes that Putin is the same type person as his western counterparts. But how many journalists and opposition leaders have been murdered in western countries?

I have been seriously worried about normalcy bias in our recent negotiations with both Iran and Russia. A persistent mistake in Western negotiations is assuming that your opponent is both rational and reasonable. To put it mildly, that isn’t always the case.

BINGO! Liberals “know” that certain “facts” are always true. There is no place in their worldview for deviation from that they “know” to be true. They assume the person they are dealing with is exactly like they’d like to think they are. (As an example, they send a woman or obvious gay person to represent America in a culture that offers no status to or kills those type people. When nothing happens to them that proves their contention. When they get killed, what now does it matter?)

FDR instituted economic warfare on the Japanese (which I have no issue with) and then totally failed to prepare for escalation to real warfare.

When you twist someones arm, you had better be ready for more than acquiescence.

Yea, it’s really hurting Putin.. So much so that he’s able to openly assassinate his opponents while flying on state owned jets selling weapons to Egypt and Syria. He’s still running rings around Lurch and Barry while Hillary hires a stadium filled with lawyers and media mouthpieces to cover-up her misdeeds.

Unfortunately Putin is at 85% approval and IS STILL making military spending his TOP PRIORITY.

At this rate, we’ll be lucky to hold Britain.

Written PERFECT. Reagan DID NOT just antagonize the Soviet Union (but he did tweak them), he also made DAMN SURE that we were READY TO FIGHT THEM if needed. So far we’ve done great at the first part, but other than adding a few LGBT brigades and an openly gay Army Chief of Staff, we have DONE NOTHING to increase our readiness.

...and yet there are TOTAL IDIOTS on this site that look at relative military spending and conclude that because of that, AND ONLY BECAUSE OF THAT, we will destroy them in any war, anywhere.
