Some 30,000 Iraqi troops and militias have launched a full-scale offensive backed by airstrikes to retake the major city of Tikrit from Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, Al Arabiya’s correspondent in Iraq said.
“Security forces are advancing on three main fronts towards Tikrit, Ad-Dawr (to the south) and Al-Alam (to the north),” an army lieutenant colonel on the ground told Agence France-Presse by telephone.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi had announced on Sunday the “zero hour” of an operation to liberate ISIS-held territories in the province of Saladin, with its capital Tikrit, according to Al Arabiya News Channel.
Iraqi forces are also “moving along side roads to prevent Daesh’s escape,” the colonel said, using an Arab acronym for the ISIS, which has controlled the hometown of executed dictator Saddam Hussein for nearly nine months.
Residents of Tikrit were reportedly told to evacuate the area ahead of the military operation.
Iraqi officials and militia commanders regard the recapture of Tikrit as an essential step toward the liberation of Mosul.
The specifics of the battle’s plan were not revealed. But military experts believe that joint Iraq forces will attack from multiple fronts.
The first location will be from the Aoja area, south of Tikrit, with the support of Iraqi Special Forces. The second front will be from an area close to Tikrit University in which the Iraqi army and police will attack from. The third attack will carried from the southwest of Tikrit.
Security sources told Al Arabiya News Channel that Iraqi forces are now in control of the northern areas of the Albu Obaid village and west of Tikrit.

Yes... to be accurate, Mosul is the HOME of large populations of people who are not Sunni Arabs. Most of them are displaced, or suffering unbearable oppression; that’s why there is such the great desire to liberate Mosul.
Oh yeah. I forgot the 0bama Factor: He’ll make sure Islamists win and America loses.
Does the “government” have enough arty to do that? I’m sure they don’t have enough air power....
Pass the popcorn, and lots of it, I hope this goes on for at least six months! And make sure no one runs out of ammo until it’s over!
The Iranians might have enough explosives, barrel bombs and such.

The media laps it up. They puts 0bama’s Americaphobia under an invisibility cloak. They hate America too.
The public is
1) Approving (44%)
2) Ignorant,
3) Aware and Apathetic, and
4) Aware and Pissed but with no recourse.
Most people know 0bama hates America and loves islam. There’s just not much anyone can or is willing to do about it now.
The Iraqi forces need a win, they get that and they’ll
be ready to do more.
I sure hope we give them the air power they need.
That oath is not unique to a lying president. Judges, politicians, mayors, law enforcement, and dog catchers swear that or a similar oath of office or civil employment.

I am pretty sure if nothing else the Iraqi Kurds, especially the Yazidi Kurds, and the Assyrians and the secularists in Iraq have zero qualms with eliminating every last ISIS supporter from the planet. Modern America often seems to not have the stomach for this but let’s at least throw our full support behind people who very much do.

I have a few ideas.
Tikrit had been the center of Sunni resistance. They had been the beneficiaries of Saddaam's rule. Might have to kill everybody there.
Muslims killing Muslims. Whoever wins, the fester still remains.
Yeah, I have a few myself. Thing is, paying the consequences for actually implementing the ideas does not interest me in the slightest at this point.
I still don’t see any of my neighbors out on their porch with their firearm.
Okay.
Still, there is a point and all.
More than a million Christian lived in ISIS-controlled lands.
