Barbara Mikulski won’t seek reelection in 2016
Politico ^ | 03/02/2015 | Kyle Cheney and Burgess Everett

Maryland Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski will announce later Monday that she won’t seek reelection in 2016, two sources familiar with her plans confirmed to POLITICO, opening up a seat long coveted by Free State Democrats looking to move up.

The 78-year-old Mikulski is the longest-serving woman in congressional history. She was first elected to the Senate in 1986, after serving five terms in the House.

Mikulski’s campaign called an 11 a.m. press conference in Baltimore on only a few hours’ notice, saying only that she’d make an “important announcement about her future plans.”

Her retirement will create an open seat in a state where President Barack Obama won 62 percent of the vote in 2012. Democrats control seven of the state’s eight House seats: Reps. Elijah Cummings, John Sarbanes, Donna Edwards, John Delaney and Chris Van Hollen could risk their seats and run statewide.

But Democrats could also be tempted to challenge first-term GOP Gov. Larry Hogan in 2018.

That’s a big seat to fill. But Moochelle certainly has the rump to fill it.

Could go to the GOP. Even the left has had it with D’s. The GOP looks like D-lite.

O’Malley will make a play for this seat no doubt about it.

How current Gov. Hogan plays the game will dictate how strong a challenger the Rats throw at him.

It won’t matter. The Dems will retain the seat.

The Democrats were hoping that regaining the Senate would be easy in 2016.

It looks like it is not going to be as easy as they thought.

While the Democrats no doubt hold those open seats, they will likely have to invest more money in doing so.

Yes, but they will have to spend more money doing so and that means they will have less money to go after GOP seats.
