Lets try this again.
Congress returns Monday staring at another deadline to finance the Department of Homeland Security. But instead of stalling again, lawmakers look more likely this time to steer the anti-terrorism agency away from the funding cliff through September.
With the clock ticking until the new Friday deadline to avert a DHS funding lapse, the GOP-controlled Senate will take the first step with a vote Monday on whether to head into formal negotiations with the House on financing the security agency. Senate Democrats are expected to block that move.
That will put the onus squarely back on Speaker John Boehner and his leadership team. Democrats fully expect the speaker to allow a vote on a so-called clean DHS funding measure that runs until the end of the fiscal year. But Republicans were coy over the weekend about what theyll do, promising only that theyll continue battling President Barack Obamas executive actions on immigration.
We want to get a conference with the Senate, Boehner said Sunday on CBS Face the Nation. Now, [Senate Democrats have] made clear that they dont want to go to conference. But theyre going to have a vote. If they vote, in fact, not to get a conference, this bill may be coming back to the House.
The messy maneuvering wasnt what Republican leaders had in mind when they took the reins of both chambers in January. Much of their early tenure has been marked by infighting over their response to Obamas unilateral immigration moves. Republicans have tried to find a way to fund DHS and at the same time foil the president on immigration, but theyve been blocked by Democrats at every turn.

I guess it’s too much to expect for the feeble-minded and hapless Mitch McConnell to go nuclear and pass the “DEFUND LAWLESSNESS” legislation with a simple majority for closure. KEEP THE “ONUS” ON THE ‘RATS. LET OBAMA VETO THE LEGISLATION SO IT WILL BE CLEAR THAT ANY “GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN” IS OWNED BY OBAMA AND THE ‘RATS.
Very well said Bobalu.
Which region of N.M. are you at and how has the winter been??
I did live in Chaparral, NM .. a few miles from El Paso.
I’m in southeast MO now and the winter is BAD :-)
Plan on going to Chama for a couple weeks just prior to going to Albequerque for the hot air festival this year.
Hear it is REAL cold in the N.M. mountains.
