Sen. Velmanette Montgomery Worries Local Grocery Store Will Be Replaced With Boutique Market

A Brooklyn state senator apologized Tuesday for remarks invoking the subject of race in a discussion about a Clinton Hill grocery store set to close – and the possibility that a “boutique” grocery store that could replace it. State Sen. Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) was quoted in The Brooklyn Paper as saying the soon-to-close Key Food store should be replaced with a similar store, because communities of color have eat differently than white communities. “Supermarkets are an important part of the community. It’s an important amenity, especially for black and brown communities,” Montgomery was quoted in the newspaper. “When you’re talking about a white community, it can be a little boutique, because white people don’t eat the way we do.” Speaking to CBS2 Tuesday night, Montgomery confirmed that she made the comments, saying, “It was an unfortunate statement and I didn’t mean to offend anyone.” Montgomery told CBS2 her intention was to imply that the supermarket planned to replace the Key Foods wasn’t right for the neighborhood. She said the Key Food store could be replaced with a “boutique” supermarket with higher prices and a smaller size.

And i just complained here on FR last week that I decry the huge influx of Mexicans into the neighborhood because I can rarely find my favorite cuts of meat. We now have pigs feet, a lot of strange cuts of meat. My cuts of steaks, roasts and pork have pgone down.

And I'm sorry her name is Velmanette? Did her mom want her to grow up to be Empress of Prussia or something?

Her parents' first choice was "Velveeta", but that name was taken.

The mix of shoppers is about 50/50 black and white and it is convivial.

In my long life, it’s true that blacks and whites in Southern States are much more assimilated than those in Northern areas. ...We’re neighbors, shop at the same places and laugh and joke with one another like good friends with the same beliefs. ...Very different from many blue States in the North.

I grew up on a family farm in south Mississippi. There is no such thing as ‘soul food’. It is simply the cuisine of the poor in the south, black and white. We all ate alike.

Her final comment, after the fact -

Montgomery told CBS2 her intention was to imply that the supermarket planned to replace the Key Foods wasn’t right for the neighborhood. She said the Key Food store could be replaced with a “boutique” supermarket with higher prices and a smaller size.

- really shows why the expression “put brain into gear before engaging mouth” came about.

But her default mode was to make it racist...

I was tempted to text in that he was being racist.

Nah, just being honest. Of course if you or I were "honest" about particular topics we'd be racist.

TRUTH- It's the new hate sppech.

Is that the way they eat?

The first part of his opinion is also correct. Local grocers know their customers better and provide a superior product.

But dont even try to get off telling me that a boutique store is just fine for me ‘cause I’m white.

What if I like chitlin’s AND menudo?

I agree, Marron - there was nothing wrong or offensive in the person’s statements about food preferences in the various ethnic groups.

People are taking themselves too seriously. Why is it wrong to make a simple statement like was said about the differences between the eating preferences in a black community and those of a white community? Isn’t that exactly what market management is all about?

Wow. No need to ever draw a caricature of that woman, just use a photograph.

I move that this image be used in place of Helen Thomas images for all purposes.

Well, at least there was no danger of any of her school mates having the same name.

Most ethnic groups have “their” dishes, genius. Duh.

Great name by the way...her mama must hate her.
