Even as the eastern U.S. freezes, there’s
less cold air in winter than ever before

Yet, in what may seem like a paradox, the amount of
wintertime cold air circulating around the Northern
Hemisphere is shrinking to record low levels. This
winter (2014-2015) is on track to see the most
depleted cold air supply ever measured.

“We are still on pace to break the all-time record —
no question about it,” says Jonathan Martin, a professor
of meteorology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“Despite the brutal cold in the eastern U.S., the whole
hemisphere is warmer this winter than it has ever been
in history.”

No, it doesn’t and the comments made by the researcher are contradictory to the research he presents. He claims there is less cold air “than ever before”, then presents data that goes back only the last 65 years or so.

I have daily high and low temperature readings from the same southern PA location that now extend 20 years...autocalculating daily and monthly averages and degree days.

February’s average temperature of 25.3 degrees was the lowest average monthly temperature record, ever, for those 20 years.

One full degree F lower than the previous record set in January 1996 and tied in February 2007.

I haven’t set any record high monthly averages since March of 2012.
